Wenn wir dagegen die weitere Entwickelung der Dramen betrachten, ergiebt sich der Mangel bald. In Angelo sehen wir, wie Rodolfo zu Catarina kommt und wie die Liebenden von Tisbe überrascht werden; diese giebt ihrer Empörung den kräftigsten Ausdruck und droht, den betrogenen Gemahl zu rufen, als sie im Zimmer der Catarina ein Kruzifix entdeckt, das einst ihre Mutter einer fremden Dame, die sie gerettet, geschenkt hat; sie selbst, Tisbe, hat sich gelobt, dieser Retterin ihrer Mutter, die sie lange vergeblich gesucht, alles, selbst ihr Leben zu opfern da sie nun in Catarina jene Dame wiederfindet, verzichtet sie auf Rache und giebt dem durch den Lärm herbeigerufenen Gemahl an, sie sei einer Verschwörung gegen ihn auf die Spur ge kommen und in der Nacht herbeigeeilt, um ihn zu warnen. Er glaubt ihr, führt sie hinweg, und Catarina kann ihren versteckten Liebhaber entfernen. Damit ist eigentlich die Sache aus. Aber das reicht nicht zu einem ordentlichen Drama, also brauchte der Dichter noch einen Akt. Und nun beginnt ein tolles Zeug. Homodei, voller Wut darüber, dafs Catarina gerettet, hat einen neuen Plan ersonnen. Er ist zu einem Häuschen aufserhalb von Padua geeilt, wo zwei vertierte Männer wohnen, die gewöhnlich das Geschäft besorgen, solche Menschen, die man heimlich ver schwinden lassen will, in die Brenta zu werfen. Hier kommt zufällig Reghinella, das Kammer mädchen der Catarina, vorbei, der Homodei einen nicht unterzeichneten Brief des Rodolfo an seine Geliebte abnimmt; dann kommt wieder zufällig Rodolfo selbst vorbei, sieht Homodei, erwartet ihn draufsen und ersticht ibn; bevor dieser aber stirbt, trägt er den beiden Besitzern des Hauses auf, den Brief Rodolfos dem Angelo zu bringen und Rodolfo als Verfasser zu nennen. Die beiden vergessen natürlich den Namen und geben nur den Brief ab; Angelo, empört über den Treubruch seiner Frau, will sie töten, läfst alle Vorbereitungen dazu treffen, ein Grab herrichten und ruft dann Tisbe herbei, um ihr sein Leid zu klagen; er zeigt ihr den Brief, Tisbe erkennt die Hand schrift, sieht, dafs Rodolfo für sie verloren ist, verrät ihn aber nicht, sondern will zum Ã?berflufs Catarina retten; auf ihren Rat wählt Angelo Gift, um seine Frau umzubringen, sie giebt statt dessen, nachdem sie der Catarina gut zugeredet, es zu nehmen, ein Schlafmittel, und diese wird in Tisbes Haus gebracht, während sie für ihren Gemahl als tot und begraben gilt. Hier bei Tisbe erscheint Rodolfo, der in Angelos Hause den Hergang erfahren, hält Tisbe für die Mörderin Catarinas und ersticht sie; in demselben Augenblick wacht Catarina auf, Tisbe rät ihnen zu ent fliehen und stirbt. Abgesehen von den vielen Längen und ermüdenden Gesprächen, wozu dient dieser 3. Akt? Nur dazu, dem Zuschauer etwas Unerwartetes vorzuführen; nach dem 1. Akt konnte man auf nichts weniger gefsfst sein, darum gerade bringt es der Dichter. Ferner wodurch ist der Tod Tisbes begründet? Was hat sie getban? Sie ist noch die beste aus der ganzen Ge sellschaft und geht unter!
