About the Book

Pedro de Angelis publicó en 1836 Derroteros y viajes a la Ciudad Encantada, o de los Césares, que se creía existió al sur de Valdivia. Angelis recopiló una gran cantidad de crónicas que dan una idea de una ciudad inventada, un paraíso perdido, un nuevo El Dorado Austral.

En el siglo XVI comenzó a extenderse entre los conquistadores españoles un rumor que se refería a una misteriosa población que se situaba, según parecía, en la parte oriental de la cordillera de los Andes, en un indeterminado lugar ubicado aproximadamente hacia los 35° o 36° de latitud austral.

Se trataba de una muy rica ciudad fundada por gente indígena huida del Perú, tras la conquista española, que había llevado consigo cantidad inconmensurable de oro, plata y piedras preciosas.

Así surgió y se creó la leyenda de la Ciudad de los Césares o de los Césares de la Patagonia, o Ciudad Encantada de la Patagonia. Todo ello fue causa suficiente para justificar numerosas expediciones y propuestas de búsqueda para conseguir tal preciado tesoro. El mito sobre su existencia perduró hasta bien entrado el siglo XVIII.

El mito de la Ciudad Encantada de la Patagonia o de los Césares motivó desde temprana época el surgimiento de una literatura especializada, que se ocupó de la materia. Por lo cual se dispone de una bibliografía variada, en la que se ha abordado esta leyenda, sus diferentes orígenes y las secuelas que tuvo tan preciado lugar.

Mencionando entre los primeros autores a los historiadores jesuitas padres Alonso de Ovalle, Miguel de Olivares y Diego de Rosales, que recogieron las noticias primigenias del mito y las publicaron durante los siglos XVII y XVIII.

Pero, sin lugar a dudas, debe señalarse entre los más importantes a Pedro de Angelis que se ocupó del asunto como recopilador de cartas, relaciones y derroteros que dan cuenta del mito de una ciudad mágica.

En su introducción Angelis, nos acerca a su visión personal sobre algunos aspectos oscuros de la época colonial...

Bajo el imperio de estas ilusiones, acogían todas las esperanzas, prestaban el oído a todas las sugestiones, y estaban siempre dispuestos a arrostrar los mayores peligros, cuando se les presentaban en un camino que podía conducirlos a la fortuna.

Es opinión general de los escritores que han tratado del descubrimiento del Río de la Plata, que lo que más influyó en atraerle un número considerable y escogido de conquistadores, fue el nombre.

Ni el fin trágico de Solís, ni el número y la ferocidad de los indígenas, ni el hambre que había diezmado a una porción de sus propios compatriotas, fueron bastantes a retraerlos de un lugar que era una promesa de riqueza infinita.

La presente antología contiene, entre otros, textos de Pedro Lozano, Silvestre Antonio de Roxas, José Cardiel, Ignacio Pinuer y Agustín de Jáuregui.
