Dabei soll die These geprüft werden, dass Widerstand nur negativ zu betrachten ist und verhindert werden muss. Die Arbeit ist primär auf Literatur und Fachdatenbanken der Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek Köln aufgebaut. Diese Erkenntnis trifft auch heute zu, denn Veränderungen fordern Unternehmen in der heutigen Zeit heraus. Durch Globalisierung und Digitalisierung fallen Aufgaben in Unternehmen weg und werden durch neue Technik ersetzt. Arbeitsplätze werden ins Ausland verlagert, um kostengünstiger zu produzieren. Eine Folge ist die Veränderungsgeschwindigkeit, die innerhalb von 30 Jahren rasant gestiegen ist. Unternehmen, die sich nicht schnell genug anpassen, sind nicht wettbewerbsfähig und können auf dem Markt nicht bestehen. Die zunehmende Veränderungsgeschwindigkeit ist ein Grund, warum in den USA in ca. 16 Jahren rund 50% der Unternehmen vom Markt verschwunden sind. Für Veränderungsmanagement hat sich der Begriff Change Management als Fachterminus etabliert. Die Studie der Firma Capgemini "Change Management 2003/ 2008, Veränderungen erfolgreich gestalten" zeigt, dass die Bedeutung von Change Management mit den Jahren deutlich gestiegen ist. Während 2003, 40% der Befragten Change Management eine sehr wichtige Bedeutung zukommen lassen, sind es fünf Jahre später 60%, mit steigender Tendenz. Die Hauptbetroffenen von Veränderungen sind Mitarbeiter und das mittlere Management. Eine Befragung zeigt, dass die Hauptbetroffenen ein negatives Bild von Veränderungen haben.
