About the Book

Der Zerfall von Kaolinit und die Bildung der Hochtemperaturphasen Mullit und Cristobalit sowie der Zwischenprodukte Meta-Kaolin und y-Tonerde wurden wegen der grundlegenden Wichtigkeit dies es Problems schon mehrfach studiert. Da der Zerfall der Tonminerale die Grundlage für alle Überlegungen zum Aufbau und der keramischen Eigenschaften der bei höheren Temperaturen gebrannten Erzeugnisse ist, werden im folgenden eine Reihe von neueren Arbeiten gebracht. Durch röntgenographische und differentialthermoanalytische Untersuchungen ist allgemein bekannt, daB Kaolinit um 600°C zerfällt; die entwässerten Schicht- pakete im Meta-Kaolin besitzen jedoch anscheinend ein dem Kaolin sehr ähn- liches Raumgerüst. Der exotherme DTA-Peak bei 950 bis 1000°C wird dagegen verschieden zu erklären versucht. Teils wird die bei dieser Reaktion freiwerdende Energie als Kristallisationswärme möglicher Kristallphasen gedeutet, teils aber auch als eine Reaktion im aktiven Zustand, bedingt durch den Zusammensturz des Meta-Kaolinit-Gerüstes. Die thermischen Effekte, welche die Reaktion beim Kaolinzerfall begleiten, wurden von INSLEY und EWELL [1] schon 1935 beschrieben. Sie nahmen an, daB während des endothermen Effektes bei 550 bis 600° C amorphe Tonerde und amorphe Kieselsäure entstehen, und daB der exotherme Effekt bei 950 bis 1000° C durch die Bildung von y-A1 0 hervorgerufen wird. Elektronenoptische Unter- 2 3 suchungen und die Auswertung von Beugungsaufnahmen von EITEL [1 a] an Kaolin zeigten, daB zwischen 700 bis 1100°C y-Tonerde, ab 950°C Mullit und ab 1200°C Cristobalit nachweisbar war.
