Die moderne Arbeitswelt ist durch den Druck ständiger Produktivitätssteigerung gekennzeichnet. Konzepte, die einen solchen Effekt durch starre Kontrolle realisieren wollen, erweisen sich dabei als ungenügend, da es die Leistungsbereitschaft der Arbeitenden begrenzt und den Zugang zu den Fähigkeiten der Arbeitenden, schnell und kreativ auf komplexe Anforderungen zu reagieren, verhindert. Das Konzept der Subjektivierung von Arbeit beschreibt die Reaktion von Arbeitnehmern und Arbeitgebern auf die Anforderung, ihre Produktivität kontinuierlich steigern zu müssen. Einerseits verlagern betriebliche Veränderungen und die Erweiterung der relativen Autonomie der Beschäftigten die Verantwortung der Erbringung der unternehmerisch wünschenswerten Leistung auf das Individuum selbst und andererseits richtigen diese in gleichem Maße neuartige subjektive Ansprüche an die Arbeit, um eigenen Fähigkeiten und Selbstentfaltungswünschen Geltung zu verschaffen. Klassische Arbeitsverhältnisse werden diesen Ansprüchen immer weniger gerecht. Sowohl betriebliche Produktivitäts-, als auch subjektive Geltungsansprüche führen zu einer Veränderung der Arbeit, der sog. Entgrenzung der Arbeit. Arbeitsverhältnisse werden in ihren wichtigsten Dimensionen aufgelöst: Festgelegte zeitliche Regelungen werden zu vagen Vereinbarungen, gleichermaßen wird der Ort der Arbeitsausführung unwichtiger; von höchstem Interesse ist nur ein hochwertiges Endprodukt. In diesem Buch soll es um die Frage gehen, was Menschen in solchen Arbeitsverhältnissen motiviert. Dazu werden die soziologischen Erkenntnisse des Bereichs der Entgrenzung von Arbeit zusammengefasst um mit Hilfe sozial- und wirtschaftspsychologischer Theorien auf die Motivation von Erwerbspersonen in entgrenzten Arbeitsverhältnissen eingehen zu können.
