Der Grund hierfür liegt unter anderem darin, dass die immer größer werdende Datenflut für den einzelnen User kaum noch zu überblicken ist und er es nicht leicht hat, die vielfältigen Informationen zu beurteilen und dementsprechend zu agieren. Daher muss sich der Nutzer immer öfters fragen, ob er einer Website Vertrauen kann, ob die angebotenen Informationen glaubwürdig sind, ob er bedenkenlos vertrauenswürdige Daten weitergeben kann und ob er über eine bestimmte Website Geschäfte abwickeln will? Bei all diesen Fragen spielt es auch eine Rolle, dass ein großer Teil der Geschäftsbeziehungen im Internet sich zwischen Fremden abspielt. Daher ist es wichtig, dass zwischen den Geschäftspartnern ein gewisses Maß an Vertrauen vorhanden ist. Damit der User die Fragen bezüglich Vertrauen beantworten kann, muss er erst einmal erkennen, was "Vertrauen im Internet" bedeutet. Danach ist es interessant zu erfahren, welche Faktoren Vertrauen erzeugen und welche Faktoren Vertrauen beeinträchtigen. Und schließlich gilt es auch zu untersuchen, ob das Vertrauen Auswirkungen auf die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Internets hat?
