About the Book

Die Legende von den heiligen Barlaam und Josaphat handelt von der Bekehrung des Königssohnes Josaphat zum Christentum durch den Mönch Barlaam. Infolgedessen konvertierte Josaphats Vater Advennir sowie sein ganzes Königreich zum christlichen Glauben. Die Legende hat ihre Wurzeln im Orient und erinnert an die Geschichte von der inneren Erweckung des indischen Prinzen Siddharta Gautama zum Buddha.
In Westeuropa wurde sie durch Übersetzung aus dem Griechischen ins Lateinische seit der Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts weit verbreitet und ist als «Vulgatfassung» in zahlreichen Handschriften erhalten. Auf deren Grundlage ist die Barlaamlegende im 12. oder frühen 13. Jahrhundert von einem unbekannten Dichter in 1956 Hexameter gegossen worden. Sie ist in einer bisher unbeachteten Handschrift der Bibliothèque Municipale von Besançon überliefert; davon wird hier die Editio princeps vorgelegt. In derselben Handschrift finden sich - allenfalls vom Autor der Barlaamdichtung stammende - Versfassungen zweier im Mittelalter ebenfalls weit verbreiteten Legenden: derjenigen des Mönches Malchus und der Jungfrau Euphrosyne. Malchus wurde gegen seinen Willen in ein Kloster verbracht, geriet in sarazenische Gefangenschaft und führte mit einer christlichen Sklavin eine erzwungene Ehe in jungfräulicher Weise. Euphrosyne lebte jahrelang als Mönch Smaragdus in einem Kloster, um ihrer Verheiratung zu entgehen. Auch diese beiden Texte werden hier erstmals ediert.
