Durante cuarenta años pero de a ratos, de a tirones -en cierto modo oportunista poeta dominguero- fui escribiendo los poemas que se enfilan detrás o debajo del rótulo general de El versero. El título tiene, entre muchas otras, una doble y consciente significación. Se sabe: versero es, en el habla popular, el que hace el verso, el que utiliza cierta supuesta habilidad verbal para persuadir/ halagar/ seducir/ trampear incluso a su interlocutor con fines precisos. En ese sentido, el versero es una versión acaso degradada, pudorosa y más o menos amable o burlona del poeta, despojado de solemnidad o impostada trascendencia. Sobre todo porque el poeta versero hace un alevoso uso funcional del poema. Y se la banca. Pero por otro lado -y el neologismo me gusta mucho- versero se puede/ debe leer y entender como el sustantivo común que denomina/ contiene/ define un conjunto, en este caso, de versos. Lo que no se sabe es -a diferencia de plumero, cenicero o florero- para qué sirve. Acordemos entonces que un versero es un conjunto de versos para usos múltiples. Me gusta eso. Me gusta haber hecho/ llenado un versero.

Algo más: por una extraña compulsión, un mecanismo que la pereza o el temor me impiden desmontar, siento que incurrí en la poesía cada vez que necesitaba realizar algún gesto público o privado de fe, una declaración de amor o de males, maldecir o poner flores. Quiero decir que muchos o todos estos textos están alevosamente marcados por la biografía, la historia y la política. Fueron (son) incluso partidarios, como la letra provocadora de una tribuna futbolera, y eso no es precisamente una virtud. Pero tampoco un rasgo que los descalifique. Ahí están, simplemente, y no es bueno que se borre con el hombro lo que se escribió con el codo. Más aún: muchos de estos versos paridos sin red en cada momento y publicados, a veces con tachaduras y curitas, juntos hoy -tarde y mal, como siempre-fueron escritos por alguien que de algún modo ya es otro. Habría que cortar, acaso. Pero el que corta suele lastimarse solo. Y nadie puede cortar(se) por lo sano. La saludable mano que corta está enferma de la misma soberbia de la que pretende deshacerse.
