Comme l'a été Gobineau, et comme le sera Bouvier, il est tout d'abord frappé à son arrivée par la vision des monuments d'émail bleu, aperçus de loin Mais là où Jean Chardin évoquait aux abords de la ville une telle animation qu'il croyait être dans ses faubourgs, deux heures avant que d'y arriver, Pierre Loti rapporte que le silence et l'isolement autour de la ville sont tels que l'on se demande si des routes y mènent: on n'y voit que de grands cimetières abandonnés où paissent les chèvres, de limpides ruisseaux qui courent partout [...] des ruines d'anciennes enceintes crénelées, et rien de plus.

À l'intérieur d'Ispahan, où l'enfermement, l'oppression des ruines et du mystère attendent le voyageur, l'écrivain français note que les édifices qui, au premier aspect, jouent encore la splendeur, sont en réalité à moitié dépouillés de leurs patientes mosaïques de faïence et semblent rongés d'une lèpre grise.
  3. Ispahan a pour l'essentiel cessé de vivre depuis l'invasion afghane, estime Loti, qui écrit que cette place unique au monde, qui a déjà plus de trois cents ans, ne verra certainement pas finir le siècle où nous venons d'entrer


  • Louis-Marie-Julien Viaud dit Pierre Loti est un écrivain et officier de marine français, né le 14 janvier 1850 à Rochefort et mort le 10 juin 1923 à Hendaye.Pierre Loti, dont une grande partie de l'oeuvre est d'inspiration autobiographique, s'est nourri de ses voyages pour écrire ses romans, par exemple à Tahiti pour Le Mariage de Loti (Rarahu) (1882), au Sénégal pour Le Roman d'un spahi (1881) ou au Japon pour Madame Chrysanthème (1887). Il a gardé toute sa vie une attirance très forte pour la Turquie, où le fascinait la place de la sensualité il l'illustre notamment dans Aziyadé (1879), et sa suite Fantôme d'Orient (1892).
  • Pierre Loti a également exploité l'exotisme régional dans certaines de ses oeuvres les plus connues, comme celui de la Bretagne dans le roman Mon frère Yves (1883) ou Pêcheur d'Islande (1886), et du Pays basque dans Ramuntcho (1897).Membre de l'Académie française à partir de 1891, il meurt en 1923, a droit à des funérailles nationales et est enterré à Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, sur l'île d'Oléron, dans le jardin d'une maison ayant appartenu à sa famille.
  • Sa maison à Rochefort est devenue un musée.
