Ruhloffs (1996) "Bildung im problematisierenden Vernunftgebrauch" bietet allgemeinpädagogisch einerseits den Rahmen für eine Auseinandersetzung hinsichtlich der Legitimitätsfrage und andererseits die Möglichkeit neue Deutungen von Bildung zu wagen. Meder zeigt mit der Sprachspielertheorie auf, wie Medienbildung mit dem Gebrauch von Vernunft gedacht werden kann. Dabei verweist Meder einerseits auf Kant und andererseits auf Ruhloffs Ansatz eines problematischen und problematisierenden Vernunftgebrauchs. Daher wird zum Durchleuten des Vernunftgebrauchs Ruhloffs Ansatz vorangestellt, um anschließend mit Meders Der Sprachspieler. Der postmoderne Mensch oder das Bildungsideal der neuen Technologien aufzuzeigen, wie Vernunft als Fundament von Medienbildungstheorien fungieren kann. Neue technologische Entwicklungen und die Unklarheit der heutigen Definition von Bildung sind die zentralen Herausforderungen bildungswissenschaftlicher Diskurse. Der sich immer wieder artikulierte Zielkonflikt zwischen Bildungsvorstellungen, die sich primär an den Erfordernissen der neoliberalen Gesellschaft und hier insbesondere des Arbeitsmarkts orientieren und jenen, die der freien Entfaltung des Individuums Priorität einräumen, ist eine Facette dieser Herausforderung. Problematisch erscheint hierbei das Verhältnis zwischen gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen und pädagogischen Maßgeblichkeiten. Ruhloff (2005) verdeutlicht in Vita Brevis - ars longa.
