Immer wieder ist es eine bruchig gewordene Burgerlichkeit der Lebensentwurfe, des Selbst- und Weltverstandnisses und der Kunstauffassungen, in der Thomas Mann sich Theodor Storm tief verwandt fuhlt. Die Widerspruche zwischen burgerlichen Traditionen und den als zersetzend empfundenen Einflussen der Moderne, zwischen Okonomie und Kunstlertum, zwischen Glaubensfestigkeit und Pessimismus, um die Thomas Manns Lebenswerk kreist, hat dieser bei Storm wiedergefunden. Wer nach Thomas Manns Beziehungen zu Storm fragt, hat es darum mit Grundkonstellationen im Werk beider Dichter zu tun.
