Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,3, Freie Universität Berlin, Veranstaltung: Deutschsprachige Literatur mit dem Schwerpunkt Neuere Literatur, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: John Dos Passos' "Manhattan Transfer" (1925) und Alfred Döblins "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (1929) zählen neben Joyce' "Ulysses" zu den bedeutendsten Großstadtromanen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ein wesentlicher Grund dafür liegt darin, dass es beiden Romanen gelingt, sowohl die Dynamik und Komplexität als auch das Chaos und die Widersprüchlichkeiten der modernen Großstadt, die sich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts explosionsartig entwickelte, literarisch einzufangen. Diese Großstadt, die die Wahrnehmung des Menschen entscheidend veränderte, ließ sich nicht mehr objektiv in der Form des traditionellen Romans darstellen. Vielmehr musste sich der Roman dem Rhythmus der Großstadt anpassen, um sie in ihrer Flüchtigkeit und Fragmenthaftigkeit zum Ausdruck bringen zu können. Indem die Autoren durch die Montagetechnik die Stadt selbst zu Wort kommen lassen, revolutionieren sie nicht nur die traditionelle Romanform, sondern rücken gleichzeitig das Verhältnis des Einzelnen zur modernen Großstadt in den Vordergrund. Schließlich sind die neuen ästhetischen Ausdrucksformen eng geknüpft an die radikale Veränderung der menschlichen Sinneswahrnehmung, die in der Forschungsliteratur als "Krise der Wahrnehmung" bezeichnet wird. Durch die schlagartige Verstädterung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts seien die Menschen zunehmend mit den permanent auf sie einströmenden Eindrücken überfordert gewesen. Folglich mussten sie neue Erfahrungs- und Wahrnehmungsstrukturen entwickeln, um mit der Reizüberflutung der Moderne umzugehen.
