About the Book

English summary: During the religious colloquy in Ratisbon 1541, theologians of both confessions tried to avoid a schism. Johannes Eck, Johannes Gropper and Julius Pflug (Catholic) and Philipp Melanchthon, Johannes Pistorius and Martin Bucer (Protestant) discussed the articles of the Wormser Book. Despite considerable effort, the colloquy failed because of the discussion on the eucharist: Cardinal Contarini refused to eliminate the notion transsubstantiatio from the article, which the Protestants refused to accept. He referred to the Lateran Concil of 1215, while the Protestants feared abuses of the sacrament, e.g. the adoration of the sacrament, which they understood to be the consequence of this notion. Saskia Schultheis examines the reasons for the failure of the colloquy and the theological-historical background of both parties by examining on which points they could share the same perspective and on which points they were not able to find an agreement. German text.
