"Materialschlacht" und "Stellungskrieg" sind die militärhistorisch relevanten Termini für die Zeit von 1914 bis 1918. Sie stehen exemplarisch für die massenhafte Vernichtung von Menschenleben durch technische Neuerungen im Kriegswesen. Die Armeeführung des Deutschen Reiches musste 1914 - nach dem Scheitern des Schlieffen-Plans - die Entscheidung treffen, ob sie den Krieg offensiv und kräftezehrend oder defensiv und mit möglichst großer Schonung der eigenen Ressourcen weiterführen sollte. Die Befürworter eines Ausgleichsfriedens ohne Sieger und Besiegte standen den Annexionisten gegenüber, die einen klaren, militärisch erzwungenen Sieg für das beste Mittel hielten, den Krieg zu beenden. Dieser Gegensatz manifestiert sich in Erich von Falkenhayn auf der einen und in Paul von Hindenburg bzw. Erich Ludendorff auf der anderen Seite. Dabei sind nicht nur ihre Friedenskonzepte, sondern auch ihre Strategien zur Fortführung des Kampfes zwischen den Mittelmächten und den Alliierten vom Grundgedanken her verschieden, weshalb der Vergleich dieser beiden Kriegskonzeptionen den Schwerpunkt dieses Werkes bildet. Der Zeitrahmen umfasst die Jahre 1915 bis 1918, wobei die vorliegende Arbeit in zwei große Themenkomplexe untergliedert ist. Zum einen werden die Kriegsstrategien der 2. und 3. Obersten Heeresleitung (OHL) auf theoretischer Ebene vorgestellt, die bestimmten Rahmenbedingungen, wie Kriegslage und Ressourcenmangel, unterlagen, welche auf die Planungen Falkenhayns und Hindenburgs/Ludendorffs eine Wechselwirkung ausübten.
