Generales y convoyes pasaban sin cesar a nuestro lado tomándonos la delantera, y ya próximos a Miranda vimos al propio caudillo, Conde de Luchana, seguido de brillante escolta, y a otros afamados jefes y oficiales, que al punto conocieron a Fernando y le saludaron gozosos. Nuestra entrada y acomodamiento en la antigua Deóbriga fue, como pueden ustedes suponer, asaz dificultosa. Éramos un brazo que se empeñaba en introducirse en una manga ya ocupada con otro brazo robusto. En ningún albergue público ni privado de los que en toda población existen para personas y caballerías hallamos hueco, ni aun pidiéndolo del tamaño preciso para alfileres; y ya nos resignábamos a la pobreza de acampar en mitad del camino, como mendigos o gitanos, cuando nos deparó Dios a un sujeto, que no sé si llamar enemigo o amigo, aunque en tal ocasión y circunstancias bien merece este último nombre, el cual, con demostraciones oficiosas y todo lo urbanas que su rudeza le permitía, nos colocó bajo techo, entre cabos y sargentos de artillería montada, con los correspondientes arreos, armones, sacos, cajas y regular número de cuadrúpedos.Era el tal D. Víctor Ibraim capellán castrense, antaño en la Guardia Real, hogaño1 en un regimiento de artillería, y tengo que calificarle, con perdón, como uno de los más soberbios animales que han comido pan en el mundo, si bien yo creo que a este sujeto todo lo que come le sabe a cebada y paja, y como tal alimento lo saborea. Cuando yo tenga el gusto de volver a esa noble casa contaré a ustedes motivos de la santa inquina que profeso a mi colega, el marcial presbítero, andaluz por más señas, y tengo por seguro que se han de reír de tan donosa historia. Por hoy conste que perdono al señor Ibraim sus agravios de otros días, y reconozco que nos ha dado a Fernando y a mí una prueba de cordialidad, procurándonos este alojamiento, que si detestable y con enfadosas apreturas, nos permite comer algo caliente y guardar nuestras personas al abrigo de la intemperie. Nuestras bestias campesinas han entrado en gran confianza con los guerreros caballos del regimiento; Sabas y Rufino hacen buenas migas con la tropa, y nosotros anudamos cada hora nuevas y más alegres amistades con oficiales muy simpáticos y con capellanes menos brutos que el desdichado Ibraim. No nos va mal, y Fernando ha tenido el gusto de encontrar amigos queridísimos entre estos campeones de Isabel II: D. Juan Zabala, D. Antonio Ros de Olano y otros cuyos nombres y títulos se me escapan de la memoria.
