Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Politik - Thema: Frieden und Konflikte, Sicherheit, Note: 1,7, FernUniversität Hagen (Fakultät für Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften), Veranstaltung: Konflikt und Kooperation in den internationalen Beziehungen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Durch die Jasminrevolution in Tunesien breitete sich der "Arabische Frühling" über die arabischen Staaten Nordafrikas aus und erreichte im März 2011 die Arabische Republik Syrien. Der syrische Präsident Bashar al-Assad reagierte zunächst mit Reformversprechen auf die sich ausweitenden Proteste. Dennoch versuchte die Regierung Demonstrationen gewaltsam zu beenden. Auf Grund der anhaltenden und sich immer weiter verstärkenden Gewalt gegen die syrische Bevölkerung beschlossen die Vereinten Nationen (VN) eine Gruppe von Beobachtern zu entsenden, um die Lage vor Ort besser beurteilen zu können. Mit den Resolutionen 2042 und 2043 des Sicherheitsrates der VN wurde die Entsendung von 300 unbewaffneten Militärbeobachtern für einen Zeitraum von zunächst 90 Tagen beschlossen. Die damit ins Leben gerufene Peacekeeping Mission "United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria"(UNSMIS) wurde auf Grund der sich verschlechternden Sicherheitslage am 15. Juni 2012 unterbrochen. Am 20. Juli 2012 wurde UNSMIS durch die Resolution 2059 um eine finale Periode von 30 Tagen verlängert. Hierin wurden als Bedingungen für die weitere Verlängerung der Mission zum einen die Beendigung des Einsatzes schwerer Waffen sowie die Verbesserung der Sicherheitslage aufgeführt. Da beide Bedingungen nicht erfüllt wurden, endete die Peacekeeping Mission UNSMIS um Mitternacht des 19. August 2012. Unter Betrachtung der andauernden Menschenrechtsverletzungen in Syrien und der scheinbaren "Hilfelosigkeit" der Vereinten Nationen geht die zu erstellende Hausarbeit folgender Fragestellung nach: "Warum gestaltet sich der Eingriff in Syrien, unter Anwendung des Konzepts der Responsibility to Protect durch die Vereinten Nationen als so schwi
