Benachteiligte Jugendliche zeigen bedingt nur vage vorhandene Vorstellungen der beruflichen Zukunft sowie der eigenen Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten. Auf dem gegenwärtigen Ausbildungs- und Arbeitsmarkt, der durch Konkurrenz und Wettbewerbsverhältnisse geprägt ist, erhalten persönliche Kompetenzen jedoch eine immens hohe Wichtigkeit. Im Übergang von Schule zu Beruf wird ein wichtiger Meilenstein für die Teilhabe in der Gesellschaft gelegt. Wer den Schritt in das Erwerbsleben nur unzureichend schafft, beispielsweise ohne Ausbildung bleibt, wird mit gesellschaftlicher Marginalisierung konfrontiert. Gerade benachteiligte Jugendliche befinden sich in einem Teufelskreis, denn oft beginnt die Stigmatisierung bereits durch schulische Selektion. So zeigt der aktuelle Chancenspiegel der Bertelsmann-Stiftung, dass benachteiligte Schüler in Baden-Württemberg durchschnittlich 81 Kompetenzpunkte weniger als privilegierte Schüler aufweisen. Aus dem Bildungsbericht des Ostalbkreises geht zusätzlich hervor, dass außergewöhnlich viele Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund Benachteiligungen beim Start in das Berufsleben erhalten: Nahezu 70% dieser Schüler erreichen maximal den Hauptschulabschluss. Die Gruppe der Schulabgänger, die nicht in einer dualen Ausbildung oder einem Studium unterkommt, verbleibt in den Bildungsgängen des Übergangssektors. Hierin finden sich 2310 Jugendliche im Ostalbkreis. Der große Schritt der Berufswahl zu einer dauerhaften beruflichen Integration benötigt ganzheitliche und umfassende Unterstützungsleistungen, vor allem individuell zielende, denn ein positives Selbstkonzept verhilft zu einer gelingenden Berufssuche. Dennoch wurden bis heute kaum Maßnahmen entwickelt, um diese Kompetenzen bei benachteiligten Jugendlichen gezielt zu fördern und deren Wirksamkeit zu überprüfen.
