When Toc first picked up the object, the first thing he noticed was that it was flatter and lighter than any stone he had ever seen. Sharp around the edges, it was dark gray on one side and glistening like water on the other-so much so that he could see his own face inside the surface.
Members of a scavenging clan led by Toc's father, Edahl, spend their days scouring the countryside for food and supplies to help them survive. Along the way, they find incredible objects from an era long gone. Have you ever picked something up off the ground and had no idea what it was? Toc doesn't know what they are or what they do, but if you pay attention, you may be lucky to recognize a few of them yourself.
Toc embarks on a series of unusual adventures-including a celebratory cow chip competition, a face-off with a giant eagle, and an escape from a pack of feral dogs. But not all will survive. When one mysterious discovery causes a deadly illness to spread among the group, many are invited to dinner with Esa in the sky-placing the future of the clan in jeopardy.
