About the Book

The Van Bakel Beach Series includes three titles: The Coney Island Hot Dog Heist Eddie Gillespie was born and raised in a shanty, backwards Brooklyn neighborhood called Van Bakel Beach. Everyone from the beach was proud to call themselves beach rats and most acted in-line with that moniker. Eddie, like many others from the beach, is a little bit of a loser. He can't get a girlfriend, he is perpetually underemployed, and is seeking a new life for himself. Eddie discovers an enigma in the neighborhood, a house filled with beautiful Russian mail order brides. He decides the best way to buy one for himself is to team up with his friend Mickey. Mickey is the classic grifter of Van Bakel Beach and agrees to help his buddy Eddie get the dough that he needs to make his pathetic dream a reality. Mickey is a man with a plan, but Joey Sallazzo, Jr. has a better one. A ramshackle gang from Van Bakel Beach is assembled to burglarize Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Restaurant in Coney Island on the day of the Mermaid Parade. After weeks of planning, scheming, and all out Brooklyn-style craziness involving trannies, junkie cops, and motorcycle gangs, the plan gets off without a hitch. Until they check the drop bag and chaos breaks out in Brooklyn. Rockaway Run The boys of Van Bakel are suffering in the heat of a Brooklyn summer. Beyond things being hot, smelly, and crowded, Eddie Gillespie can't stand always losing, Mickey O'Sullivan is sick of being financially strapped, and Joey Sallazzo just lost his wife, his girlfriend and his job. This team of pathetic delinquents decide that with nothing left to lose, they are going to try for a big score just one more time. However, this job is going to be different than the last. This time there will be absolutely no outsiders in for the take. With some IT help and website ingenuity of hired hand, the beautiful and mysterious Mallory Fenton, the team sets up a website for a fugazi marathon. The First Annual Keith Condon Rockaway Run is an event meant to aid in the search for their friend who disappeared only a couple of months earlier. Their plan takes off a little too well and the team finds themselves forced into making the marathon a reality or losing out on over 3 million dollars. Battle for the Canal The third and final book in a series involving two life long friends from Van Bakel Beach, Brooklyn. Mickey and Eddie are finally on a winning streak. They got the girls, the high paying scam, and are now well respected beyond the confines of their neighborhood, Van Bakel Beach. Eddie's girlfriend, Brittany, is disgusted with the worsening conditions in the Beach, and convinces Eddie to run for their district's state senate seat against the beloved incumbent, Michael Gallagher. Her marketing schemes bring Eddie and Mickey to perform at a drag show, the Freak Show in Coney Island, a cameo in a daytime soap and even play the part of an emcee at a dog costume contest in order to win the attention and votes of hard-headed Brooklynites. Meanwhile something sinister is lurking in seedy corners of Brooklyn. Dismembered bodies of members and affiliates of the motorcycle gang, God's Only Demon's are showing up in different waterways of Brooklyn while their limbs are anonymously mailed to suspected mob fronts. The motorcycle gang becomes pitted against the mob in this dark and gruesome whirlwind story of Eddie Gillespie's attempt to win an election.
