About the Book

2015 New England Book Festival award in Young Adult Fiction category. For kids who like ghosts stories and weird tales. As a bonus, reading comprehension and discussion questions after each of the 13 stories, plus writing challenges for those who want to write their own stories. From 4-time Mom's Choice Award winner Steve Burt, who writes the FreeKs paranormal teen detective thrillers, and Jolyn Joslin, retired middle-school teacher. Answers in back of book for parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians.
About the Author: STEVE BURT writes in many genres. In 1976 his canoeing guide sold out in months. In the 1980s he wrote bestselling small-church leadership books and such inspirational books as A Christmas Dozen, with stories excerpted for Family Circle and Chicken Soup for the Soul. In 2001 he tried his hand at young-adult ghost stories (Stories to Chill the Heart series), which earned a 2003 Bram Stoker Award nomination (runner-up to Harry Potter) and a 2004 Bram Stoker Award (a finals field with Clive Barker and Dean Koontz). Then 2010 brought his FreeKs teen mysteries trilogy, with 30 awards including 4 Mom's Choice golds, a Moonbeam Children's Book Teen silver, and a Florida Book Festival grand prize. In 2015 he released an innovative textbook, Vampires, Ghosts, and Graveyards: Ghost Stories and Weird Tales to Help Kids Read, Learn, and Write Their Own Stuff, which won a 2015 New England Book Festival Award for Young Adult Fiction. And in 2016 came Publish Your Book Free. (Dr. Burt is an instructor at Florida's Lifelong Learning College on this topic.) Later in 2016 came another series (Dumb Jokes for Kids: First Worst Joke Book, Second Worst Joke Book, Third Worst Joke Book). Additionally, the Rev. Dr. Burt has won 3 Ray Bradbury writing prizes, the Benjamin Franklin Award, and 10New England Book Festival Awards. Many of his 30 books are available in regular print, large print, ebook, and audio book. In 2009 Connecticut Magazine profiled Rev. Burt as "The Sinister Minister," acknowledging the importance of his contribution to teen and Y.A. dark fiction. He now lives and writes in both Maine and Florida, offering school author visits nationwide via Skype. His two Facebook pages are FreeKs and Christmas Story Pastor, his Twitter handle is wrytuh, his website (with blog page and calendar) is www.SteveBurtBooks.com, and his blog, Wicked Good Wrytuh, is www.SteveBurtBooks.wordpress.com.
