Dieses Kennzahlenbuch wurde vor dem Hintergrund der Anwendung der Methode "Value Management" geschrieben. Das Buch versteht sich als ein "Baustein" im Rahmen der wertorientierten Organisationsführung. Da in der anwendungsneutralen Methode "Value Management" (EN 12973) bzw. in der Wertanalyse-VDI-Richtlinie 2800 der Wert (Value) eine ausschlaggebende Rolle spielt, beginnen Optimierungsansätze i. d. R. bei der Suche nach "werterhöhenden" oder "wertvernichtenden" Faktoren. Diese sind in den organisationsinternen Kennzahlen zu finden, die üblicherweise in den Organisationen weitgehend vorhanden sind. Da Kennzahlen nicht nur zur Überprüfung eigener Leistungen sondern auch zum nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerbsvergleich dienen, wurde mit dem vorliegenden Kennzahlenbuch ein Portfolio mit überwiegend nationalen als auch internationalen Kennzahlen geschaffen. Das vorliegende Buch ist deshalb als pragmatische Arbeitshilfe für kapital- und nicht kapitalmarktorientierte Organisationen zu verstehen. Vorstände/Geschäftsführer Controller und andere Entscheidungsträger sind darauf angewiesen, lfd. über die wirtschaftliche Lage ihrer Organisation oder von Teilbereichen informiert zu sein. Sie nutzen als Hilfsmittel überwiegend tangible (messbare) Kennzahlen. Tangible Kennzahlen dienen zugleich der Aufdeckung von Stärken und Schwächen in der Organisation. Soweit möglich, wurden Kennzahlen mit Zielwerten zur Orientierung versehen. Die Problematik der Zielwertbestimmung besteht darin, dass es neben bekannten Kennzahlen mit vorhandenen Zielwerten, zahlreiche weitere Zielwerte gibt, die von der Erzeugniserstellung (Produkt- und Dienstleistungserstellung), von der Branche und teils auch von der technischen Ausstattung abhängig sind.
