Par un jeu d'echelles entre les hommes, Europeens et indigenes, qui forment le Corps expeditionnaire francais et cette armee consideree comme enjeu politique et diplomatique, par un souci constant de comparaison avec les forces britanniques et americaines, avec d'autres theatres d'operations, voire avec d'autres conflits, il a pour ambition de saisir la complexite et l'humanite de cette histoire.Au-dela des operations militaires, le livre revient sur la genese du corps commande par le general Juin, et en particulier sur la levee en masse en Afrique du Nord. Il souligne le poids humain et economique de la mobilisation - et notamment l'appel aux femmes -, analyse les modalites de recrutement des troupes indigenes dans les trois contextes distincts de l'Algerie, du Maroc et de la Tunisie. Cet ouvrage renouvelle egalement l'histoire politique de l'armee francaise pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il souligne les reticences d'une armee d'Afrique, encore traumatisee par la defaite, a renier le Marechal et les valeurs pronees par Vichy. L'arrivee en Afrique des Forces Francaises Libres et des evades par l'Espagne impose une rupture: alors que le primat de l'obeissance guide l'action de l'armee d'Afrique, les Francais Libres pronent l'esprit de resistance. L'epuration de l'armee confiee aux tribunaux militaires a partir de novembre 1943, bien que clemente, provoque un traumatisme durable au sein de l'armee d'Afrique. Le livre examine par ailleurs la participation a la campagne d'Italie du Corps expeditionnaire francais, a la lumiere des debats sur la strategie mediterraneenne qui empoisonnent les relations entre etats-majors britannique et americain de 1942 a 1944.Tout en soulignant le role du Corps expeditionnaire francais dans les combats (batailles du Monte Cassino de janvier 44 et Garigliano de juin 44), ayant permis la liberation de Rome en juin 1944, le livre propose une analyse renouvelee des nombreux viols et pillages perpetres a l'encontre des civils italiens qui ternirent les victoires remportees. Depassant les explications trop souvent manicheennes des historiographies francaise et italienne, il souligne la pluralite des facteurs ayant provoque ce deferlement de violence.En guise d'epilogue, le livre revient sur le reglement de la guerre lors des conferences internationales de 1945 a 1947. En brossant un bref tableau de la memoire blessee des anciens du Corps expeditionnaire francais, il montre enfin comment le corps du general Juin est devenu pour beaucoup le dernier avatar glorieux d'une fraternite d'armes idealisee entre Europeens et indigenes et, a ce titre, le vestige d'un monde disparu et regrette.Ancienne eleve de l'Ecole Normale Superieure et agregee d'histoire, Julie Le Gac est chercheuse associee a l'Institut des Sciences Sociales du Politique (Universite Paris Ouest, ENS de Cachan).
