It helps you discover the irrational ideas that cause you problems in achieving your objectives and shows you how to replace them with more constructive and useful ways of thinking. About the Author: The beautiful little town of Estes Park, right outside the east entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, in Colorado, is where I was so lucky to live growing up. I went to college in Denver, and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, right after dirt was invented in the desert. In school, the standard tests given to all the students showed I was very intelligent and gave my teachers a reason why I often saw things very differently than everyone else. Years later, I qualified for Mensa with an IQ in the top 1% of the population. My intelligence never earned me any friends or made any money for me by itself, but it gave me the ability to understand a lot of things I eagerly read on many subjects for which I was never formally educated. I saw the very first episode of Star Trek in September, 1966, and I became fascinated with Mr. Spock because of his logic and lack of emotion. I modeled many of my philosophies and attitudes around the character and his Vulcan Beliefs, and it affected my entire life. In my early twenties, I read the book, "A Guide to Rational Living," by Dr. Albert Ellis. Later, I slipped into a lecture he was giving out in Scottsdale so I could meet him, and then read several more of his books. I also read "Psycho-Cybernetics," a book by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, and attended a course on it which was taught by him and Charles Schreiber. Each of these men had a profound influence on me. The concepts for the "Emotion Compass" were formulated in my mind a couple years before the turn of the last century. I sketched out the basic chart of it and realized it could have very practical uses for analyzing my behavior and staying on course toward the goals I set. I continued to develop and refine the ideas while I tested them on myself. I finally decided it was time to make the tool available to everyone else and wrote this book. I used visual metaphors for the workings of the brain and left out the technical terminology to make it easier for anyone to use effectively in steering toward a happier, more productive life. I hope you find it very helpful.
