José Bento Renato Monteiro Lobato (Taubaté, Província de São Paulo, 18 de abril de 1882 - cidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, 4 de julho de 1948) foi um escritor, ativista, diretor e produtor brasileiro.Foi um importante editor de livros inéditos e autor de importantes traduções. Seguido a seu precursor Figueiredo Pimentel ("Contos da Carochinha") da literatura infantil brasileira, ficou popularmente conhecido pelo conjunto educativo de sua obra de livros infantis, que constitui aproximadamente a metade da sua produção literária. A outra metade, consistindo de contos (geralmente sobre temas brasileiros), artigos, críticas, crônicas, prefácios, cartas, livros sobre a importância do ferro (Ferro, 1931) e do petróleo (O Escândalo do Petróleo, 1936). Escreveu um único romance, O Presidente Negro, que não alcançou a mesma popularidade que suas obras para crianças, que entre as mais famosas destaca-se Reinações de Narizinho (1931), Caçadas de Pedrinho (1933) e O Picapau Amarelo (1939)."Urupês", obra publicada originalmente em 1918, reúne ao todo 14 contos de Monteiro Lobato. Segundo o prefácio da 2a. Edição do livro, esta obra surgiu do artigo "Velha praga", publicado originalmente no jornal O Estado de São Paulo no ano de 1914. Na época, Monteiro Lobato dedicava-se ao trabalho na fazenda que recebeu como herança de seu avô e amargava um ano terrível por conta da seca. Além do problema causado pela seca do inverno, Monteiro Lobato estava exausto das constantes queimadas praticadas pelos caboclos. Por conta disso, ele resolveu escrever uma carta de indignação ao jornal, que viu naquele texto algo muito valioso e o publicou fora da seção de cartas dos leitores. "Velha praga" causou grande impacto e polêmica, fazendo com que Monteiro Lobato publicasse outros textos que dariam origem ao livro "Urupês".Um destes textos, cujo título dá nome ao livro ("Urupês"), dá vida ao que seria sua mais famosa personagem: o caboclo Jeca Tatu. Se o índio surgira como modelo ideal do brasileiro para os escritores do Romantismo da fase indianista, a figura do caboclo aparecia como seu substituto moderno - ao que Monteiro Lobato chamou de "caboclismo". Porém, o caboclo de Monteiro Lobato não era em nada idealizado, mas ao contrário, trazia suas características negativas enfatizadas e o seu símbolo máximo é a personagem Jeca Tatu.A personagem de Jeca representa toda a miséria e atraso econômico do país de então, e o descaso do governo em relação ao Brasil rural. Jeca Tatu foi caracterizado por Monteiro Lobato como um homem desleixado com sua aparência e higiene pessoal, sempre de pés descalços e que mantinha uma pequena plantação apenas para subsistência. Sem nenhum tipo de educação e cultura, Jeca Tatu era um homem ingênuo e repleto de crendices. Por fim, era visto pelas pessoas como um alcoólatra e preguiçoso. Porém, como afirma Monteiro Lobato, "Jeca Tatu não é assim, ele está assim", percebe-se através do texto que Jeca é uma vítima do descaso do governo.
