About the Book

Ernst Buschor, langjahriger Ausgraber des Heraion auf Samos, hat 1959 festgestellt: Wohl kein anderes grosses griechisches Heiligtum kann in so geschlossenem, anschaulichem Bild von seinen fruhen Jahrhunderten bis in die spaten verfolgt werden wie dieses, und von keinem anderen Fundort hat die altionische Baukunst so bedeutendes Licht empfangen. Es war Buschors grosses wissenschaftliches Verdienst, die Fruhzeit dieses Heiligtums zu entdecken, mit den Hekatompedoi I und II, hundertfussigen Tempelbauten, die den beiden Riesentempeln Dipteros I und II vorausgingen, und sechs bis ca. 1000 v. Chr. zuruckreichenden Steinaltaren, die unter dem gegen die Mitte des 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. erbauten und mit Dipteros I zu verbindenden Grossen Altar zutage kamen. Der Verlust von Fundmaterial und Grabungsdokumentation im Zweiten Weltkrieg verhinderte die endgultige Publikation dieser wichtigen Grabungen. Hauptziel der nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von Buschor wiederaufgenommenen Grabungen war es, zunachst die Bauten und Anlagen innerhalb des vor dem Krieg ergrabenen Bereichs erneut zu untersuchen, die verlorenen Befunde wiederzugewinnen und zu veroffentlichen. Nach Buschors Tod 1961 untersuchte Hans Walter mit Angelika Clemente als Architektin noch einmal den Kernbereich des fruhen Heiligtums, die fruhen Altare und die Hekatompedoi I und II. Walters Weggang 1965 von Samos um den neu gegrundeten Lehrstuhl fur Klassische Archaologie an der Universitat Salzburg zu ubernehmen und die Ausgrabungen auf dem Kolonna-Hugel auf Agina wieder aufzunehmen, fuhrte zu einer grossen Verzogerung der endgultigen Publikation der Grabungen der Jahre 1957 bis 1964 im samischen Heraion und - damit verbunden - zu Unsicherheiten in Hinsicht auf Datierung und Gestalt der fruhen Bauten im Heiligtum und zu kontroversen Diskussionen um sie. Der vorliegende Band, in dem grundlegend die Topographie, Architektur und Geschichte des fruhen Heraion von der minoischen Thalassokratie uber die mykenische Expansion, die Ionische Wanderung, den grossen Aufschwung des Heiligtums im 7. Jh. v. Chr. mit den ersten Tempelbauten und zahlreichen Weihegaben aus Agypten und dem Vorderen Orient bis in die Zeit der Errichtung des ersten Grosstempels, Dipteros I, in der ersten Halfte des 6. Jhs. v. Chr. dargestellt und in den geographischen Rahmen der gleichzeitigen Entwicklungen auf den Inseln der Sudost-Agais und an der Westkuste Kleinasiens gestellt wird, schliesst daher eine wichtige Lucke in der Samos-Reihe.
