Durch die Ansiedlung großer Industriebetriebe, deren Profit vor allem auf der schonungslosen Ausbeutung der Arbeiter basierte, wurden die Menschen in großen Massen vom Land in die aufstrebenden Städte gezogen, die ihnen zwar Arbeit und ein größeres Maß an persönlicher Freiheit boten, jedoch auch eklatant schlechtere individuelle Lebensbedingungen. Die schwere Arbeit in den Produktionsbetrieben verhalf dabei den Unternehmern und den Städten, in denen die Betriebe standen, zu schnellem Reichtum, verschliss dabei aber die Arbeiter in ungeheuren Zahlen. Es stand jedoch zu jederzeit eine ausreichende Reservearmee an arbeitsfähigen Menschen zur Verfügung; schließlich benötigten die Fabriken zum Großteil nur ungelernte Arbeiter ohne besondere Qualifikationen. Die Massenhafte Warenproduktion verändert dabei, gepaart mit stetiger technischer Innovation zunehmend das Antlitz und den Lebensstandard in Westeuropa. Es werden zunehmend komplexere Produktionsverfahren entwickelt, die die Menge der benötigten zunehmend teurer werdenden Arbeiter reduzieren. In einem stetigen Prozess steigt dabei das Bildungsniveau der Menschen und der Grad der Technisierung im Produktionsprozess. Der Bedarf an Arbeitsplätzen in der Produktion geht in gleichem Maße zurück wie der Bedarf an Gütern, die mit simplen und arbeitsaufwendigen (im Sinne von menschlicher Arbeit) Produktionsmethoden hergestellt werden können.
