The Upanishads is composed of sages and poets and is part of the sacred and ancient scriptures that are the basis of the Hindu religion called the Vedas. Among the Vedic literature, the Upanishads alone are widely known, and their central ideas are at the spiritual core of Hinduism.
The Upanishads are commonly referred to as Vedānta or the "last chapters, parts of the Veda", and also as "object, the highest purpose of the Veda"
Around 108 Upanishads are known of which the first dozen, referred to as the principal or main (mukhya) Upanishads, are the oldest and most important.
The twelve main Upanishads (listed in mostly traditional order):
Katha, Isha, Kena, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitaeya, Chandogya, Brihadaranyaka, Swetasvatara, Kaivalya.
