So konnte Beratungsdiebstahl zwar in diversen Untersuchungen belgt werden, liefert jedoch keine weitere Information über Gründe für das Aufkommen von Beratungsdiebstahl. Genau hier setzt die durchgeführte empirische Untersuchung an und versucht Gründe und Gesetzmäßigkeiten für die Entstehung von Beratungsdiebstahl zu identifizieren. Als Ansatzpunkt dient der Kaufenscheidungsprozess des Konsumenten. Das Ziel der Untersuchung besteht darin, Unterschiede zwischen jenen Konsumenten die Beratungsdiebstahl praktizieren und jenen die dies nicht tun, hinsichtlich ihres Kauf- und Informationsverhaltens, ihres Entscheidungsprozesses sowie hinsichtlich demografischer Variablen zu erkennen und herauszuarbeiten. Obwohl viele Branchen vom Beratungsdiebstahl betroffen sind, konzentriert sich diese Arbeit speziell im Hinblick auf die Untersuchung auf die Branche der Consumer Electronics (CE) hat jedoch nicht nur für diesen Bereich Gültigkeit. Die zugrunde liegende Forschungsfrage lautet daher: "Was sind Gründe für das Aufkommen von Beratungsdiebstahl und von welchen Kriterien hängt dieser ab?"
