Zu diesem Zweck werden ausschließlich die Medien Film und Fernsehen betrachtet, da eine Gegenüberstellung von realen Medienakteuren und fiktiven Charakteren hier am einfachsten vorzunehmen ist. Zudem ermöglichen die audiovisuellen Darstellungen im Unterschied zu anderen Medien ein wirklichkeitsnahes Abbild des Geschehens und der Personen, was wiederum die Wahrscheinlichkeit der parasozialen Interaktion mit diesen erhöht. Für das allgemeine Verständnis der folgenden Inhalte werden im ersten Teil die zentralen Begriffe, die relevant für diese Arbeit sind, erklärt. Dabei wird vor allem Bezug auf die grundlegenden Annahmen über parasoziale Phänomene von Horton und Wohl genommen, die Tilo Hartmann in seinem Buch "Parasoziale Interaktion und Beziehungen" (2017) erneut aufgegriffen hat. Der darauffolgende Abschnitt behandelt, basierend auf dem Zwei-Ebenen-Modell parasozialer Interaktion von Hartmann, Schramm und Klimmt (2004), die grundlegenden Wahrnehmungs- und Bewertungsprozesse von Medienpersonen bzw. -figuren. Im Anschluss werden die Gemeinsamkeiten von realen Medienakteuren und fiktiven Charakteren beschrieben, bevor in einer Gegenüberstellung die Unterschiede der beiden Gruppen bezüglich parasozialer Interaktionen und Beziehungen ausführlich behandelt werden. Zu diesem Teil haben wieder Hartmann, aber auch Baeßler mit ihrem Buch über "Medienpersonen als parasoziale Beziehungspartner. Ein theoretischer und empirischer Beitrag zu personazentrierter Rezeption" (2009) und Gleich mit seinen Erkenntnissen über "Parasoziale Interaktionen und Beziehungen von Fernsehzuschauern mit Personen auf dem Bildschirm.
