Diese setzen in der Richterzeit ein und reichen bis in die zweite Hältfte des 9. Jahrhunderts v.Chr. Die Verkündigungen der Propheten haben die Geschichte Israels begleitet und geprägt. Häufig treten Propheten an Wendepunkten auf und sind das Werkzeug Gottes, um seinen Willen zu verkünden. "Den gesellschaftlichen Hintergrund ihres Auftretens bildete die immer größer werdende Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich." Dadurch, dass Propheten massive Kritik übten, waren sie häufig Außenseiter in der Gesellschaft. Ihnen wurde nicht nur mit Redeverbot gedroht, sondern auch mit Ausweisung und der Todesstrafe. "Insofern waren die Propheten Rufer wieder den Strom gegenwärtigen Denkens und Handelns, die sich nicht dem Mainstream anpassten, sondern in sprichwörtlicher Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Zeit und ihren Menschen standen." Elia kann als herausragende Einzelgestalt beschreiben werden, der - im Gegensatz zu den Schriftpropheten - die Botschaft Gottes an Einzelpersonen richtet. So kommt es in 1Kön 21 zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem regierenden König Ahab: dieser will möglichst viel Land besitzen und benötigt dazu den Weinberg des Nabot, der ihn ihm aber nicht abgeben will, da es gegen die Gesetze verstoßen würde, den Weinberg nicht weiterzuvererben. Daraufhin lässt Ahabs Frau Isebel Nabot hinterlistig und unbegründet Gotteslästerung vorwerfen, was zu dessen Steinigung führt. Ahab erhält den Weinberg, wird aber durch Elia von Gott auf sein schlechtes Verhalten aufmerksam gemacht. Unheil soll über ihn und sein Land kommen. Die typische Botenspruchformel "So spricht der Herr" legitimiert die Botschaft als Gottes Wort, woraufhin Ahab Angst bekommt und seine Tat bereut. Deshalb verzeiht ihm Gott. Die Ge
