Wie wird international und in der Schweiz Mathematik unterrichtet? Welche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zeigen sich? Zeichnen sich Mathematikstunden aus Ländern, deren Schülerinnen und Schüler in Leistungstests besonders gut abschneiden, durch besondere Gestaltungs- und Qualitätsmerkmale aus? Was lässt sich über Merkmale guter Unterrichtsqualität aus der Perspektive von Schülerinnen und Schülern, Lehrpersonen und aussenstehenden Experten aussagen? Wie wirken sich didaktische Gestaltungsmerkmale, Lernmotivation und Selbstvertrauen auf Fachinteresse, Engagement und Leistungen aus? Antworten auf diese und weitere Fragen suchten zwei Videostudien, deren Ergebnisse in diesem Band vorgestellt werden: Im Rahmen der internationalen "TIMSS 1999 Video Study", an der sich auch die Schweiz beteiligt hat, wurden je 100 videografierte Mathematikstunden des 8. Schuljahrs aus sieben Ländern systematisch analysiert. Darüber hinaus wurde in der mehrsprachigen Schweiz eine erweiterte Videostudie durchgeführt, welche auf der Basis eines mehrperspektivischen Zugangs sowohl Innen- und Aussensichten als auch Bedingungen und Wirkungen des Mathematikunterrichts untersuchte. Nach einem Überblick über die teilweise überraschenden Befunde der internationalen Videostudie werden im Hauptteil des Buches die Ergebnisse der schweizerischen Videostudie erstmals im Gesamtzusammenhang dargestellt. Videostudien setzen dort an, wo die periodisch durchgeführten internationalen Schulleistungsstudien aufhören. Während TIMSS und PISA wertvolle Erkenntnisse und Trends zu den Ergebnissen nationaler Bildungssysteme liefern, machen sie keine Aussagen über die Qualität der Bildungsprozesse, insbesondere des Unterrichts.
