Zudem werden Theorien und Konzepte zum "Unternehmer im Unternehmen" und zum "Mitunternehmer" vorgestellt. Der stetige Wandel der Märkte erfordert auch bei der innerbetrieblichen Organisation und im Personalwesen eine Anpassung auf die äußeren, immer höheren Ansprüche. Auch werden in den letzten Jahren die Auswirkungen der Globalisierung deutlicher. Die Märkte wachsen zusammen. Dies ermöglicht es den Konsumenten, umfassendere Informationen zu erhalten, Produkte besser vergleichen und auf eine deutlich höhere Zahl von Lieferanten und deren Angebote zugreifen zu können. Die Unternehmen sehen sich einem sehr starken Käufermarkt gegenübergestellt und stehen zusätzlich durch größer werdende internationale Konzerne unter einem enormen Wettbewerbsdruck. Diesem äußeren Druck versuchen viele Unternehmen zu begegnen, indem sie den Druck an ihre Mitarbeiter weitergeben und gleichzeitig massiv Kosten einsparen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde vielfach Personal abgebaut und die Leistung des noch verbleibenden Personals meist anhand von Kennzahlen beurteilt. Übersehen wurde, dass durch ein solches Vorgehen die Motivation der Mitarbeiter sinkt und somit auch deren Produktivität. Es ging zudem noch das verloren, was die Unternehmen groß gemacht hatte: ihre Innovationskraft. Diesem Defizit wird mit teilweise sehr freien und radikalen Konzepten begegnet. Den Mitarbeitern werden Freiräume gegeben, innerhalb derer sie sich entfalten können. Die Wirtschaftswissenschaften, die Soziologie und auch die Organisationspsychologie beschäftigen sich seit vielen Jahren mit Konzepten und Theorien, die darauf abzielen, die Motivation der Mitarbeiter zu erhöhen.
