Leutnant Holischka gähnte laut und ließ den Säbel fallen, dann griff er hastig in die Tasche nach dem Feuerzeug, zündete sich seine gewohnte Virginia an und schlenderte, große, hellbläuliche Rauchwolken ausstoßend, durch die enge Straße. Laut rasselte der Säbel über das holprige Pflaster. Ein paar Gardinen verschoben sich hinter den Fenstern, spitze Nasen und weiße Nachtjacken wurden sichtbar - die spitzen Nasen drückten sich platt an den Scheiben und wurden dann wieder ganz spitz, man konnte ihnen ordentlich den Unwillen ansehen. Es war noch ziemlich früh am Tage, und ein dünner Herbstnebel, vom Rhein kommend, stand in der Straße und verdichtete sich auf dem Paradeplatz, den der Leutnant eben durchquert hatte, so sehr, daß die Kugelakazien, die ihn umstanden, nicht mehr zu unterscheiden waren und nur ganz plötzlich vor ihm auftauchten, erst in allernächster Nähe greifbare Gestalt annehmend. Dieselben Kugelakazien, die der Leutnant Tag für Tag sah, dreimal, viermal, von denen die eine so langweilig ausschaute wie die andere, eine wie die andere. Aber wie verschieden und wie verändert erschienen sie jetzt; eine jede isoliert vom Nebel, tauchten sie plötzlich fast gespenstisch auf, und er hätte gewettet, er kenne jede! Wenn es also eine Veränderung in dieser kleinen Garnison gab, konnte sie nur die Jahreszeit hervorbringen. Am Ende des Winters war er gekommen, Frühling und Sommer kannte er hier; aber nun ging es stark auf den Herbst, und heute war der erste richtige, feuchte und kühle Spätjahrsmorgen, dann kam also der Winter. Richtig im Winter verloren die Kugelakazien ihr Laub, ihre egalen, länglich runden, befiederten Blätter, die aussahen, als seien sie numeriert und aus Blech, langweilig, langweilig wie diese öde, verschlafene Garnison. - Nun! Im Winter fielen sie ab, die Blätter, und dann sah der kleine Paradeplatz verändert aus, kahl und wahrscheinlich frostig - aber vielleicht hatte er dann intime Reize, die er, Leutnant Holischka. bis jetzt nicht hatte entdec
