Zu den grundlegenden Aufgaben der Soziologie als Disziplin gehort es, institu- onellen Wandel empirisch zu beschreiben und theoretisch zu erklaren. Die - genstande ebenso wie die Erklarungsprogramme sind vielfaltig. Eine besondere Herausforderung stellt dabei die Analyse derjenigen Institutionen dar, mit denen man unmittelbar vertraut ist. Eine solche Institution ist fur einen Wissenschaftler sicherlich die Universitat, die, um die Kernthese von Frank Meier bereits v- wegzunehmen, im Rahmen allgemeiner Prozesse der gesellschaftlichen - teurskonstitution zunehmend in einen einheitlichen und organisierten Akteur transformiert wird. Diese These theoretisch zu entwickeln und empirisch aus- leuchten ist weder einfach noch trivial. Sie ist nicht einfach, da die Analyse der Universitat vom Forscher gerade aufgrund ihrer Verankerung in seinen Allta- erfahrungen ein hohes Mass an Selbstdistanz voraussetzt. Ebenso wenig ist die These trivial. Zwar gehoren Universitaten mit zu den altesten Organisationen der Welt. In der Organisationsforschung schatzt man, dass ca. 80 % der Organisat- nen, die seit mehr als funfhundert Jahren bestehen, Universitaten sind. Ebenso sind die klassischen Kriterien zur Bestimmung einer formalen Organisation wie etwa Mitgliedschaft oder formale Regeln selbstverstandlich bei Universi- ten schon seit Anbeginn erfullt. Dennoch trat die Universitatsorganisation als - genstandige Steuerungsebene gegenuber ihren professoralen Mitgliedern, den Disziplinen und dem Staat kaum in Erscheinung, wie weite Teile der histo- schen Universitatsforschung betonen. Damit unterscheiden sich Universitaten deutlich von anderen, starker vertikal integrierten Organisationen, wie sie etwa von Max Weber mit Blick auf die preussische Staatsburokratie oder von Alfred D. Chandler mit Blick auf amerikanische Grossunternehmen beschrieben wurden."
