About the Book

UNITED WE RISE! features four distinct stories "dreamed up" with 80 fourth graders at Larchmont Elementary School in Mount Laurel, NJ. The stories, written by author S F Hochman based on the students' plotting and characters, carve out highly creative paths to welcome new and very different kinds of students to the mythical Mont Larch School. Larchmont Elementary plans to use the book to introduce students to their values and the "Larchmont family." That said, you do not have to be a Mount Laurel student to enjoy and learn from these stories. In fact, you don't even have to be a fourth grader. All you need is a good imagination, an open heart, an offbeat sense of humor, and about an hour per story to read and contemplate. In "Haht Dauhg & Mustard," a new child arrives from a far away land with strange clothing and customs. Hahtvashtigubba Dauhg is friendly and kind, yet something about him ruffles the easily ruffled Margitte Mustardi, who is also fairly new and different. She resists and ridicules Haht day after day until she flushes out a dark secret. Once his past becomes known, both Haht and Margitte are changed and seemingly linked forever. "Vote for Chubbee" is a fantasy about an an overly curious student who on his way to school happens upon a simultaneously disturbing and lovable character. While some kids join Nick in welcoming this charismatic character, others fear him. The sides collide and a major battle ensues. "Borscht!" could have just as rightly been titled "Even Geniuses Make Mistakes." It evolves from the idea that in the absence of information, rumors fill the void. In this case, some of the brightest and best intentioned students create problems when they rush to judge someone. Is what they think true? Or is it just a bunch of baloney or in this case... Borscht! "United We Rise!" is also the school's credo. In this fable, a very, very different student, perceived to be the enemy of the others, is invited to school by the esteemed master teacher. Only one student, little Dalabani, dares to befriend the different one. Against great odds, they demonstrate that through ACCEPTANCE, COOPERATION, KINDNESS... United We Rise! This book is supplemented by comprehension and vocabulary games that can be accessed online. For more information, visit www.doandyouwilllearn.com
About the Author: After decades of writing speeches and video scripts for international motivational speakers and Fortune 500 companies, Hochman plunged into writing for kids and WITH KIDS. Actually, it's less a plunge than a natural progression spanning three decades of volunteering in schools. In the 2012-2013 school year, Hochman published his first children's book, laZy, craZy & amaZing. He followed up with an illustrated version (laZy, craZy & amaZing: The ZequIllustration) featuring imaginative pictures drawn by elementary school students. He awarded 15 student artists with special recognition at school assemblies. Next came Mr. Hocklenutty's Magic Glasses, dreamed up with first graders then illustrated and narrated with an extremely talented group of 4th graders. Next Hochman tackled the subject of bullying. The offbeat metaphor WATER COMES, narrated by a clam, features an inadvertently heroic skunk who evolves from being bullied to becoming an overbearing bully himself. A standing ovation from a "highly evolved" fifth grade class in Moorestown, NJ provided ample impetus to finalize and publish! At the end of the 2012-2013 school year, Hochman completed Mister Fancy Dancer with an assembly of students and educators at Whittier Family School in Camden, NJ. The story dreamed up with 5th graders follows the painfully humble Caezaah Wiggington and his battle to overcome his inability to communicate orally by speaking from his heart through his dancing. When his day comes, Caezaah seizes it! Hochman's 2014 "Dream It Up!" project resulted in Unite We Rise!... 4 stories that build bridges between Being Unique and Belonging. Eighty fun and fertile-minded fourth graders from Larchmont Elementary School in Mt. Laurel, NJ served as his muses, plotters and character developers. Beyond reading and writing with kids, Hochman provides a very entertaining school assembly that encourages kids to tap their creativity, voice their opinions and share some brilliant insights about the stories and life. If you have suggestions, comments, even criticisms, please email hoc@doandyouwilllearn.com. Even at his age, he understands he is still a work in progress always hoping to do better next time. Visit www.doandyouwilllearn.com for more information. *Hochman started volunteering with BookMates in 2006 in Willingboro, NJ. His connection to and with kids increases exponentially with each new creative encounter.
