Beruhend auf wahren Begebenheiten führt er die Geschichte eines heranwachsenden Mädchens aus der hanseatischen Oberschicht weiter, die nicht nur im äußeren Zusammenbruch, sondern auch durch familiäre Wirren ihren Weg finden muss. Anfangs ist vom Krieg in Hamburg nicht viel zu spüren. Nach dem erfolgreichen Polenfeldzug glauben viele an ein baldiges Kriegsende. Trotzdem stehen im Leben der inzwischen 13jährigen Eva-Maria Trautmann tiefgreifende Veränderungen an: Durch den Tod ihrer geliebten Großmutter hat sie nicht nur ihre einzige Vertraute in der Familie verloren. Das führt auch zu einem Umzug in ein größeres Haus und damit für Eva-Maria zu einer Flut von Pflichten, denen sie sich kaum gewachsen fühlt. Ihr Bruder hingegen rührt keinen Finger. Die Streitigkeiten zwischen den Geschwistern nehmen an Schärfe zu; die Angst vor der Strenge und den Strafen des Vaters macht sie unfrei. Und schließlich spülen Luftangriffe bei Nacht und Arbeitsdienst bei Tag die letzten Reste ihrer Kindheit davon. Ein kleiner Lichtblick ist nur die Tanzstunde, zu der ihre Mutter sie und Albert anmeldet. Eva-Maria schwärmt bald für ihren Tanzpartner Malte, dem besten Freund ihres Bruders, der im Auftrage der Eltern mit Argusaugen darüber wacht, dass auch ja alles, schicklich' bleibt. Dann greift der Krieg noch tiefer in ihr Leben ein: Albert und fast seine gesamte Klasse melden sich freiwillig zum Dienst an der Waffe. Während er zur Marine kommt, geht es für Malte im Juni '41 nach Russland. Als die Royal Air Force im Juli '43 Hamburg in Schutt und Asche bombt, sitzt Eva-Maria mit ihren Eltern im Keller und wartet auf den Tod. Sie überleben und fliehen nach dem zweiten Angriff der Engländer aus der brennenden Stadt. Doch werden sie jemals nach Hamburg - oder was davon übrigbleibt - zurückkehren können
