Ryno de Marigny, un dandy dévoyé, et Hermangarde de Polastron, une jeune fille chaste, tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre. Pour vivre avec Hermangarde, Ryno décide de quitter la Vellini, l'amante qu'il a côtoyée ces dix dernières années. Mais, en dépit de sa volonté, il ne parvient pas à se détacher de sa vieille maîtresse, ce qui brisera la vie du nouveau couple. Publié en 1852, 'Une vieille maîtresse' se déroule en 1830. C'est l'histoire d'une faute et comme l'a dit l'auteur, 'un roman vécu où il y a du sang coagulé.' Le séduisant Ryno de Marigny, 'scandale vivant du faubourg Saint Germain' épouse la belle Hermangarde 'au teint pétri de lait et de lumière' Le couple s'établit en Normandie dans le Cotentin aux paysages violents et contrastés entre la lande et la mer. Mais la Vellini, ancienne maîtresse du jeune homme réapparaît: 'Tu passeras sur le coeur de la jeune fille que tu épouses pour me revenir', lui avait-elle prédit lors de leurs adieux. Commence alors la lente désagrégation du bonheur ou de son apparence. La Vellini impose de nouveau sa loi, celle de l'amour tragique, exclusif et destructeur. Elle vaincra. Avec ce roman Barbey donne une illustration de ses thèmes fondateurs et de sa philosophie du roman et de la vie. On ne peut être fidèle qu'à ce qui est sa propre origine, il est impossible d'échapper au destin qui dicte sa loi. Enfin, le roman en général, et c'est là toute sa signification, n'a pas pour mission de propager l'angélisme ou d'édifier inutilement, mais doit savoir montrer l'être humain dans sa gloire autant que dans sa chute et sa déchéance.

Né au sein d'une ancienne famille normande, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly baigne dès son plus jeune âge dans les idées catholiques, monarchistes et contre-révolutionnaires. Un moment républicain et démocrate, Barbey finit, sous l'influence de Joseph de Maistre, par adhérer à un monarchisme intransigeant, méprisant les évolutions et les valeurs d'un siècle bourgeois. Il revient au catholicisme vers 1846 et se fait le défenseur acharné de l'ultramontanisme et de l'absolutisme, tout en menant une vie élégante et désordonnée de dandy. Il théorise d'ailleurs, avant Baudelaire, cette attitude de vie dans son essai sur le dandysme et George Brummell. Ses choix idéologiques nourriront une oeuvre littéraire, d'une grande originalité, fortement marquée par la foi catholique et le péché.
