En mariant leurs enfants, madame Daliphare et madame Nélis s'étaient donc rencontrées sur ce point que Juliette et Adolphe devaient partir en voyage. Il n'y avait point eu discussion à ce sujet, tant la chose paraissait naturelle aux deux mères; les plaisanteries des amis ou des parents n'étaient pas à craindre, mais les convenances étaient à respecter. De leur côté, Adolphe et Juliette n'avaient mis aucune opposition à cet arrangement. Adolphe, parce qu'il était impatient d'avoir tout à lui celle qu'il aimait et que le voyage devait lui assurer un long tête-à-tête. Juliette, parce qu'elle ne résistait à rien depuis qu'elle avait consenti à se marier. Elle considérait, en effet, qu'en donnant son consentement elle s'était engagée d'avance à accepter tout ce qu'on exigeait d'elle, et, bien que ce voyage ne fût pas pour lui plaire par toutes sortes de raisons, elle n'avait pas voulu le repousser. Il convenait à sa mère, à sa belle-mère, à son mari: il devait lui convenir aussi. Les explications qu'elle aurait pu apporter à l'appui de son refus étaient si vagues et même si bizarres, qu'elle n'eût pas voulu les formuler devant tout le monde: on l'aurait accusée d'originalité, on ne l'aurait sans doute pas comprise. Elle avait donc accueilli sans aucune résistance l'idée d'un voyage en Suisse. Après tout, pourquoi pas ? elle ne connaissait point la Suisse. Autant voyager que rester à Paris; autant aller en Suisse qu'ailleurs.
About the Author: Hector-Henri Malot dit Hector Malot, né le 20 mai 1830 à La Bouille, non loin de Rouen, et décédé le 18 juillet 1907 à Fontenay-sous-Bois, est un romancier français. Biographie: Veuf, son père, notaire, épouse en secondes noces la veuve d'un capitaine au long cours. Les deux époux ont, de leur premier mariage, chacun deux enfants. Hector est donc le benjamin d'une famille que l'on dirait aujourd'hui recomposée . Enfance et adolescence: Alors que le père manifestait un caractère rigide empreint d'une certaine sévérité, la mère, plus conciliante, berçait l'enfant de récits de voyages (peut-être inspirés par ceux de son premier époux). Elle développa ainsi son goût pour les histoires. Lorsqu'à l'âge adulte, il s'opposa à la volonté paternelle, préférant la voie des lettres aux études de droit, elle le soutint dans son choix. Le jeune Hector fit ses études au lycée Corneille de Rouen où Gustave Flaubert l'avait précédé dix ans plus tôt. Il s'y lia d'amitié avec celui qui fut quelque temps le secrétaire de Sainte-Beuve, Jules Levallois, futur critique littéraire. Ses études ne furent pas brillantes; il souffrit d'un système scolaire dans lequel il ne pouvait pas s'exprimer. Ses préférences allaient à l'histoire dont l'enseignant était un original, à l'esprit libre.
