Der Band bietet einen Einblick in den aktuellen Stand des literaturwissenschaftlichen Arbeitens in der Orientalistik: Er zeigt die Methodenvielfalt, die inzwischen in deren Teilfacher (Arabistik, Turkologie, Iranistik) eingezogen ist und demonstriert die systematische Arbeit und Auseinandersetzung mit den jeweils gewahlten theoretischen Vorgaben, die alle neue Blickweisen und neue Erkenntnismoglichkeiten uber orientalische Literaturen mit sich bringen. Daruber hinaus soll der Band einen wichtigen Schritt hin zur dringend gewunschten und notwendigen Vermittlung der heterogenen Ansatze in den orientalistischen Literaturwissenschaften darstellen. Die Auseinandersetzung mit neuen, fachfremden Konzepten sowie die Prufung ihrer Tragfahigkeit fur das orientalistische Quellenmaterial wurde bislang meist dem Einzelnen uberlassen. Die Fruchtbarkeit einer Zusammenarbeit hat sich in dem Forum "Theoretische Wege zu den Literaturen des Vorderen Orients" bereits bewahrt, aus dessen Arbeit heraus das Buch entstanden ist.
