About the Book

Understanding Criminal Profiles in 21st Century America is unique because its current perspectives are laced in the documented realities of reliable scholars, robust data, and the experiences of justice practitioners. Its topics are consumed in the realities of criminology and profiling, and are often compared with the realities of the social media including television performances. This book will satisfy scholars, students, and practitioners who favor practical recommendations because its narratives are from the impressions of colleagues, front-line personnel, and offenders. One mission of the writer is to enable an open minded reader to think for himself or herself, to understand, to imagine, to reflect, and to exercise good judgement when thinking about the principle issues related to the American criminal justice system. The topics reflect notions about why violent behavior is committed by some and not others, how it can be better controlled, and how to prevent it.
About the Author: Dennis J. Stevens, PhD, is retired from the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) and is the director of Justice Writers of America, an organization guiding justice personnel (by invention only) to articulate their experiences in a confidential setting. Stevens has taught criminal psychology, counselling and justice courses in major universities and counseled high-risk prisoners at Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, and New Orleans. Dr. Stevens has published twenty-four university textbooks, five popular media books, and nearly one hundred scholarly articles about law enforcement, corrections, and criminology (see crimeprofessor.com). He has led crisis intervention sessions among Boston and New York City officers after 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing, New Orleans and Houston officers after Hurricane Katrina, and Chicago and Dallas officers after the execution-style murders of their own. Finally, he has aided in the murder defense of indicted officers, and has developed psychological profiles of convicted violent offenders in his capacity as a prison treatment provider (i.e., Narcotic Anonymous) for the department of corrections in several states and foreign countries. Relevant to Criminology In 2021 America and its intention to compare the versions of the media with the realities of crime, Stevens wrote the textbook: Media and Criminal Justice: The CSI Effect (Jones and Bartlett, 2011).
