Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,0, Universität zu Köln (Englisches Seminar I), Veranstaltung: Shakespeare Studies, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Zwei Jahre nach der Premiere seines Filmes "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" tritt der Regisseur des Filmes, Baz Luhrmann, vor ein ausgewähltes Publikum und erklärt seine Gründe, warum er das Bedürfnis verspürt hatte, diesen Film zu machen. Er erklärt seinem Publikum, dass Shakespeare etwas mit allen Leuten im Raum gemeinsam habe, nämlich die Tatsache, dass er in einer Stadt wie London, zu der Zeit mit 400000 Einwohnern, täglich 4000 Menschen, die meist betrunken, grölend oder flegelhaft waren, eine Karte für eine seiner Vorstellungen verkaufen musste. Baz Luhrmann ist der Überzeugung, dass Shakespeare aus diesem Grunde gezwungen war, Stücke zu schreiben, die "aggressiv, sexy, unterhaltsam und voller Action waren", denn nur dann wären die Zuschauer still gewesen. Weiter ist sich Baz Luhrmann sicher, dass Shakespeare es aber auch gleichzeitig schaffen musste, Stücke mit solchen Inhalten zu verfassen, dass Menschen "verschiedenster Herkunft" erreicht werden konnten. Viele Kritiker äußerten über Baz Luhrmanns Filmversion des Stückes "Romeo and Juliet", dass sie eher einer MTV-Produktion gleiche, und nicht mit dem klassischen Stück, sondern eher mit einem modernen Videoclip vergleichbar wäre. Ziel dieser Hausarbeit ist es nun, durch Analysen von ausgewählten Themen und Symbolen, welche nur ein Bruchteil der möglichen sind, die zum Teil sowohl im Theaterstück als auch im Film zu finden sind, oder aber auch nur in der Filmversion vorliegen, zu zeigen, dass es durchaus möglich sein kann, Shakespeare in einem "neuen" Gewand darzustellen, ohne ihm oder seiner Intention untreu zu werden. Außerdem ist es ein weiteres Ziel dieser Hausarbeit, die Komplexität und Mehrdimensionalität des Filmes, nicht nur in Hinblick auf das klassische Bühnenstück, sondern auch in Hinblick auf neue Möglic
