UN RÉQUIEM PARA MAQUIAVELO Los héroes de la antigüedad realizaban grandes hazañas con el fin de alcanzar la inmortalidad y el reconocimiento de los dioses, aunque con ello se les fuera la vida en el intento, como Aquiles frente a las murallas de Troya; sin embargo, el político florentino Nicolás Maquiavelo con un pequeño libro de unas pocas decenas de folios, y escrito en poco más de tres meses, logró que su nombre llegase hasta nuestros días y traspasase la barrera del tiempo y el olvido. Maquiavelo no era hijo de Dioses como Aquiles de Tetis y el valiente humano Peleo, o Hércules del propio Zeus y la hermosa Alcmena. Era solo un ciudadano de la imperfecta República de Florencia, de humilde cuna, sin dotes ni intenciones de realizar heroicidades, escaso de recursos y sin otros atributos más que su inteligencia, su ojo crítico y observador y su facultad para conocer las intenciones y el proceder de los hombres, sobre todo en la "misteriosa" y poco asequible política, y en el arte o mal arte de gobernar. Él no se propuso ser héroe, puede que no lo sea, pero después de 500 años se le recuerda en todas partes y sobre todo en ese vocablo atribuido o derivado de su apellido, "maquiavélico", sin que él fuera un tipo maquiavélico más que cualquier hombre de su época y de nuestros tiempos. Él no combatió valientemente contra los troyanos, ni siquiera en las frecuentes luchas internas entre los italianos de entonces, ni mató a Héctor en combate, ni siquiera a un posible rival florentino con una afilada daga, pero si lo hizo con las armas que tenía a su alcance: su pensamiento claro y superior, sus palabras convincentes, la diplomacia y la política. Hércules limpió los Establos de Augías en un solo día, pese a que llevaban años recibiendo excrementos de ganado, en lo que constituye una de sus grandes hazañas. Maquiavelo descorrió el manto velado que ocultaba la conducta hipócrita de los gobernantes, exponiendo los secretos de la política para exhibirla desnuda, como diosa vestal y que pudiese ser comprendida y realizada por todos. Pero Maquiavelo no se consideraba un héroe mitológico, ni siquiera un héroe humano, y conocía muy bien sus limitaciones, era consciente de ellas y me hubiese censurado por ingenuo y arrogante nada más leer estos primeros párrafos. Más bien consideraría que con estas alabanzas estoy siguiendo su juego de hipocresía y que fui un buen discípulo o lector de el príncipe, al esconder mis verdaderos sentimientos de repulsa a algunas de sus sentencias. Es Nicolás Maquiavelo pues, una figura controvertida de la historia, lo que nadie quiere ser o aspirar a ser, pero que al final algo se ve obligado a practicar, sobre todo los gobernantes. Condenado el contenido de sus obras por la religión, y las clases más conservadoras de todos los tiempos, sus restos, si lo son, descansan en la Basílica de la Santa Croce de Florencia, junto a los hombres más venerados de la ciudad del Renacimiento: Miguel Ángel y Dante, entre otros, y es lugar visitado por personas de todas las nacionalidades, independientemente de su raza, color o creencias religiosas: cristianos y laicos, asiáticos, africanos, americanos de toda América, también de Australia y Oceanía, en fin, de todos los lugares y rincones del planeta, y ahí está Nicolás Maquiavelo observándolos desde la eternidad con su sonrisa de la Mona Lisa, que no se sabe si es de burla, conmiseración, o tristeza.
About the Author: Calixto López Hernández, Químico Industrial, Lic. en Química, nació en camagüey, Cuba en 1948. Profesor Universitario durante varias décadas. Ha publicado novelas, libros de relatos así como ensayos sobre pensadores y filósofos humanistas. En su obra de ficción se resaltan los valores del ser humano en el contexto de África y América. Particularmente extensos son sus ensayos sobre los códigos ético, educativo y político de Confucio. Actualmente reside en Europa.
