André Laffont, un jeune entreprenant parisien à défaut de trouver une situation convenable dans sa ville natale, vient convaincu par Miguel, un occasionnel ami vénézuélien, d'aller vivre à Caracas.Introduit auprès dans la bonne société de Caracas, lors d'une fête il connait les composants de deux familles très importantes: l'une des Cortés, dont les deux parents, très riches, le prennent toute de suite en sympathie, et André de se part, ayant connu leur fille, Cecilia Cortés, tomba amoureuse d'elle et commence à rêver de l'épouser pour entrer triomphalement dans la haute société vénézuélienne. L'autre famille, celle des Varela, est formée par un couple sans fils, dont lui, Rodrigo est PDG d'un important institut bancaire national et, étant ami du président du Pays, il est strictement lié au gouvernement au pouvoir. Elle, Victoria Varela, son épouse, est une belle femme, plus jeune du mari de moins de trente ans. André se fixe deux objectifs importants. Obtenir la main de la belle Cecilia, seule héritière de la fortune des Cortés et devenir ami particulier de Victoria Varela, femme décomplexée dans les affaires et aussi exigeante avec ses amis, en particulier ceux de sexe masculin, si jeunes et beaux. André s'appuiera sur son nouvel ami, connu lors d'une battue de pêche au marlin autour de l'île de Ambergris au Belize. Il est américain et s'appelle William Blair, âgé de soixante cinq ans et ancien opérateur financier, qui a quitté l'entreprise après de gains remarquables qui l'ont rendu multi millionnaire. Passionné de la pêche hauturière, il déverse son amour paternel, n'ayant jamais eu des fils, sur le jeune ami et l'aidera de s'en sortir d'une situation dangereuse lorsque Victoria Varela sera trouvée assassinée et André soupçonné d'être le coupable.
