Resume: Un homme dans la nuit L'histoire debute a la veille du XXesiecle aux Etats-Unis par un meurtre: a bord de l'Union Pacific Railway, la jeune Mary fait feu sur son protecteur et fiance, le richissime Jonathan Smith, alors que celui-ci dans un acces de jalousie s'apprete a poignarder Charley, un jeune employe dont il a decouvert la coupable liaison avec sa promise. Le corps est jete du train en marche et les deux amants disparaissent. Puis est decrit par le recit l'existence d'un microcosme parisien qui s'organise, vingt ans apres ces faits, autour de Maxime Lawrence, de sa femme, la belle Adrienne, et de ses deux enfants, Lily et Pold. Ce dernier, jeune homme fantasque, s'est lie d'amitie avec le tapissier du Sentier M. Martinet et s'est mis en tete de courtiser une cocotte a la mode, la provocante Diane. C'est dans la cour des mondains qui entourent cette derniere qu'apparaissent deux figures mysterieuses: le prince Agra, riche et jeune potentat originaire des Indes anglaises dont le parcours, de Mayerling a la Russie tsariste, draine dans son sillage de l'amour, des larmes et du sang et le difforme Sir Arnoldson, surnomme l'Homme de la Nuit, qui n'apparait qu'emmitoufle dans un ample macfarlane, le regard occulte par des lunettes. Entre Paris et la residence de campagne des Lawrence, pres du Bois de Misere et de son Auberge Rouge, ces deux personnages sulfureux vont se trouver au centre d'une sanglante manipulation faite de mensonge amoureux, d'amitie en trompe-l' il, de rendez-vous fatals et de deshonneur orchestre. Gaston Leroux est un romancier francais, ne le 6 mai 1868 a Paris (10e arr.) et mort le 15 avril 1927 a Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). Il est surtout connu pour ses romans policiers empreints de fantastique. Biographie Gaston-Alfred-Louis Leroux grandit en Normandie et suit sa scolarite au college d'Eu. Apres avoir obtenu le baccalaureat de lettres au lycee de Caen, il s'installe a Paris en octobre 1886 et s'inscrit a la faculte de droit. Il devient avocat en 1890 et exerce cette profession jusqu'en 1893. Pour arrondir ses fins de mois, il ecrit des comptes rendus de proces pour le journal L'Echo de Paris. Sa relation du proces d'Auguste Vaillant, auteur de l'attentat de la chambre des deputes, tombe sous les yeux de Maurice Bunau-Varilla, directeur du journal Le Matin, qui propose a Leroux de devenir le chroniqueur judiciaire de ce quotidien, a l'epoque le plus important de Paris. Leroux a ainsi l'occasion de suivre le proces de personnages qui auraient pu figurer dans ses romans, en particulier les anarchistes poseurs de bombes. A partir de 1901, devenu grand reporter, il effectue de nombreux voyages en France et a l'etranger, notamment en Espagne et au Maroc. Au Matin, il fait paraitre en 1903 un feuilleton, Le Chercheur de tresors, qui parait l'annee suivante sous le titre La Double Vie de Theophraste Longuet. De juin 1904 a mars 1906, il est l'envoye special permanent du Matin en Russie et assiste, a ce titre, aux sanglantes premices de l'ecroulement de l'empire des tsars."
