Siglo XIII. Jacopo de la Varazze es fraile en un convento de dominicos no lejos de Génova, Italia. Trabaja asiduamente en la obra que signará su existencia, La Leyenda áurea. Se afana en recopilar la vida de los santos que compondrán su libro. Tras concluir la de Santa Ciríaca, es el turno de San Jorge, el más popular entre todos los santos de la cristiandad. Pero, al revisar las muchas leyendas, relatos y apuntes que posee la biblioteca conventual sobre el santo que le servirán de guía, los encuentra poco convincentes, contradictorios, manidos, de poca profundidad y hasta sosos. Con semejantes materiales no se puede trabajar. De espíritu imaginativo y creador, fray Jacopo no resiste la tentación de cambiar rasgos fundamentales de esta leyenda, creando la suya propia, jugosa, entretenida y llena de humor; versión que el fraile elabora en el más absoluto secreto para no ser tomado por hereje si es descubierto. Por pura diversión invierte el orden establecido: transforma el dragón, Draco Pestifer, en el protagonista. Transpone su papel tradicional de representar el mal al convertirlo en un sabio que conoce todas las debilidades y tropelías de los humanos. Las discute acaloradamente con el soldado romano Georgius de Capadocia, el futuro San Jorge, que ha venido a matarlo por las razones equivocadas, al obedecer ciega y testarudamente las órdenes del rey de Lidia, ladino, manipulador y cobarde. Aparece asimismo una joven peculiar alrededor de la que pivota toda la historia y varios otros personajes que dinamizan la trama, desembocando en una apoteosis de luces y sombras. La fantasía que ha creado fray Jacopo ocurre a finales del S. III, la época del San Jorge real. La acción transcurre en una serie de cuadros pintorescos, entre los que destaca la fuente junto a una cueva en la montaña de la que se provee de agua un pueblo próximo a la ciudad de Sardes (actual Turquía), capital de Lidia por entonces, reino sometido al poder de Diocleciano, emperador de Roma. El final arroja a los varios protagonistas de la historia, tan apócrifa como las que arrastra la tradición, hacia direcciones inesperadas, a través de conflictos y situaciones tanto trágicas como hilarantes
