En 1791, Chateaubriand part pour l'Amérique, continent qui lui inspire de nombreuses descriptions dans les "Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe" (1848). Fin mars 1792, il se marie, avec Céleste Buisson de la Vigne. En 1800, il rentre en France et publie l'année suivante "Atala". 1802 est l'année de publication du "Génie du christianisme" qui marque son ralliement provisoire à Bonaparte, oeuvre qui est aussi un plaidoyer en faveur de la religion et qui comporte "Atala" et "René".Bonaparte le choisit en 1803 pour accompagner le cardinal Fesch à Rome comme premier secrétaire d'ambassade, puis en 1803, il est chargé d'affaires dans la République du Valais. Après sa démission, il voyage en Orient. Il y compose "Les Martyrs" (1809). Ce voyage lui inspire "L'Itinéraire de Paris à Jérusalem" (1811). Dès 1811, Chateaubriand commence les "Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe" dont la rédaction prend trente ans. La même année, il est élu à l'Académie française.Ministre de l'Intérieur de Louis XVIII sous la Restauration, Chateaubriand devient Pair de France après l'exil définitif de Napoléon. En 1816, la publication de sa "Monarchie selon la Charte" cause sa révocation. De 1822 à 1824, il est ministre des Affaires étrangères, et est invité à démissionner pour avoir critiqué la politique du gouvernement. Après la mort de Louis XVIII, Charles X arrive au pouvoir et Chateaubriand devient ambassadeur à Rome en 1828.Au cours de la "Monarchie de Juillet", Chateaubriand est écarté du pouvoir à cause de son désaccord au passage au trône de Louis-Philippe. Il abandonne alors définitivement la politique.Il se voue, alors, entièrement à l'écriture de ses "Mémoires". Il en donne la première lecture publique chez Juliette Récamier, son amie, en 1834. Cette oeuvre qu'il achève en 1841 est publiée à titre posthume. Son dernier ouvrage publié est une biographie de Dominique-Armand-Jean Le Boutillier de Rancé (1626-1700) "La Vie de Rancé" (1844).Ce fut en outre un journaliste. Il fut l'auteur d'articles retentissants, dans "Le Moniteur" et "Le Conservateur".Chateaubriand est considéré comme l'un des précurseurs du romantisme français et l'un des grands noms de la littérature française.
