La version anglaise est illustrée par Arthur Rackham.Ce livre est annoté par un extrait en bilingue: Noël comme la fin du sacrifice / Christmas as the End of Sacrifice (Extrait d'Un Cours en Miracles).Un chant de Noël (A Christmas Carol), également publié en français sous les titres Cantique de Noël, Chanson de Noël ou Conte de Noël, est le premier et le plus célèbre des contes écrits par Charles Dickens et considéré comme son oeuvre la plus parfaite.Dickens a écrit dans la préface de l'édition originale: Je me suis efforcé dans ce petit livre fantomatique, de soulever un fantôme d'idée qui ne mettra pas les lecteurs de mauvaise humeur, ni envers eux-mêmes, ni leurs proches, ni le temps de l'année, ni moi-même. Qu'elle hante plaisamment leur foyer et que personne ne songe à s'en débarrasser. Leur loyal serviteur et ami, C. D., décembre 1843. L'accent est mis sur l'agréable, de pair avec la saison de l'année. Pourtant, le conte n'est pas essentiellement festif et pose de nombreuses questions tant de société que d'ordre personnel. Merry Christmas! ( Joyeux Noël ! ); c'est depuis la parution du Chant de Noël, écrit Cochrane, que le monde anglo-saxon se salue ainsi chaque 25 décembre en signe de ralliement. D'après Standiford, le patronyme Scrooge s'est transformé en nom commun et l'exclamation humbug est devenue populaire. Au printemps de 1844, The Gentleman's Magazine note une soudaine augmentation des dons aux institutions charitables, et Robert Lewis Stevenson, après avoir lu le conte en 1874, fait voeu de générosité. Thomas Carlyle, une fois le livre fermé, organise à l'instar de Scrooge deux dîners de fête pour des familles nécessiteuses. Outre-Atlantique, un industriel nommé Fairhurst, après avoir assisté à une lecture publique à Boston en 1867, décide de fermer son usine chaque 25 décembre et de faire livrer une dinde à ses employés. Au début du XXe siècle, la reine de Norvège envoie des cadeaux de Noël signés Tiny Tim aux petits londoniens handicapés, et selon Ruth Glancy, le conte se lit dans les tranchées de la Première Guerre mondiale. Ainsi, pour l'historien Ronald Hutton, la célébration de Noël telle qu'elle se pratique aujourd'hui doit beaucoup au renouveau enclenché par Dickens. Selon lui, le romancier a cherché à promouvoir la générosité personnelle aux dépens des admonitions de l'Église et de l'action communautaire des paroisses. Sa vision d'ordre séculier, se surimposant à la pratique religieuse, a inauguré les rituels centrés autour du repas de fête, de la convivialité familiale et de l'échange de cadeaux. À ce titre, Margaret Oliphant n'avait pas tort de souligner l'importance - mais elle le faisait de manière ironique - de la dinde, si abondamment distribuée après la conversion de Scrooge. C'est ainsi qu'un simple conte, ne figurant pas parmi les meilleures oeuvres de son auteur, d'abord écrit pour des raisons financières et à l'origine conçu dans la tradition des morality tales des XVe siècle et XVIe siècle, offrant une allégorie de la rédemption mue par un pathos appuyé, en est venue à redéfinir l'esprit et l'importance d'une célébration de saison étouffée depuis l'emprise puritaine du XVIIe siècle.
