Sir Ludovic Barrere, agente jubilado de los servicios secretos británicos, vive plácidamente y de incógnito en compañía de su esposa en un pequeño pueblo asturiano de montaña (Cornejas del Astur). Una de sus ocupaciones principales es la pesca de la trucha (sin cebo). Un buen día (domingo 12 de junio de 2016), recibe una visita sorprendente: Oscar Barney, secretario y mano derecha de su exjefe en Londres (lord Arnold Montagu), se presenta en Cornejas y le transmite un mensaje urgente: vuelven a requerirse sus servicios. Tras una serie de desventuras de Oscar Barney en la cornisa cantábrica, sir Ludovic vuela a Londres donde lord Arnold le comunica cuál va a ser su misión. Existe una residencia de montaña en Suiza, en un enorme castillo y dirigida por una misteriosa fundación, en la que se organizan estancias de verano para mayores de 65 años. El precio de las mismas es exorbitante, solo al alcance de grandes fortunas. (Los satélites espía han desvelado que los viejos, en la residencia, viven inmersos en una bacanal casi perpetua.) La mayoría de los ancianos que han estado en esa residencia en años anteriores han fallecido poco después de regresar a sus hogares, dejando buena parte de sus bienes a la citada fundación. Sir Ludovic deberá inscribirse en la residencia como acompañante de Oscar Barney a fin de averiguar quién maneja los hilos de la organización que está acumulando un enorme capital. En la ciudad de Gstaad, a pocos kilómetros de la residencia, un cabo español de la Guardia Civil bastante torpe y que se ha visto involucrado casualmente en la historia, colabora en la investigación. Será él quien, accidentalmente por supuesto, acabe con un proyecto secretísimo (y casi de ciencia ficción) de uno de los conglomerados mafiosos más terribles que existen hoy en día en el mundo, una organización que creía tenerlo todo bajo control, pero a la que le quedó, obviamente, un cabo suelto. Protagonistas de esta historia son también, entre otros: M. Anatole Plusoumoins, engominado director de la residencia de montaña; sir Humphrey Applepy, secretario permanente del primer ministro británico; Arístides Davidoff, un misterioso conde moldavo; el doctor Krüeger, un médico poco recomendable; Adèle Soiron, una dama muy refinada; Cayetana, camarera en Gstaad; Torerito, un búfalo con malas pulgas; Olivio, un león tontaina, y Maguila, un gorila amargado. El cóctel (Orange Safari) está servido, pasen y ríanse.
