Der Konsum von Alkohol stellt zwar nicht das wichtigste Motiv für den Kneipenbesuch dar, dennoch kann sich kein Kneipengast auf Dauer dem vorherrschenden Trinkzwang entziehen. "Das Trinken in der Kneipe und die ihn kommunikativ umschließenden Handlungen sind stark formalisiert und institutionalisiert. Wer mit wem und was trinkt, ist alles andere als zufällig. Auch das Trinken trennt oder verbindet die Kneipenbesucher, die sich den dabei geltenden Regeln, Motiven, Werten, Konventionen und der sozialen Kontrolle unterziehen." Trinken als Form des Sozialverhaltens steht im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit. Dabei geht es nicht nur um die Trinkmengen, sondern vor allem um Rituale, die mit der Aufnahme alkoholischer Getränke verbunden sind. Die Frage, warum besonders in Kneipen Alkohol getrunken wird, durchzieht die komplette Arbeit. Der Schwerpunkt liegt hier bei den Trinkmotiven 'normaler' Konsumenten und nicht der der Alkoholiker. Der Alkoholiker kann nicht anders, er braucht Alkohol, weil er sonst nicht vergessen kann. 'Normale' Konsumenten grenzen ihre Motivation gegenüber der der Süchtigen ab, indem sie die Freiwilligkeit, das Nicht-Brauchen besonders hervorheben. Außerdem trinken Millionen Menschen in Kneipen ohne Alkoholiker zu werden, so dass der Kneipe keinen direkten Bezug zum Alkoholismus nachgewiesen werden kann. Dies darf jedoch nicht als Verharmlosung missverstanden werden. Alle Menschen die Alkohol zu sich nehmen, sind unter bestimmten psychischen und sozialen Bedingungen gefährdet, jedoch spielt die Kneipe dabei eine untergeordnete Rolle.
