Konstantes in Zeiten des Umbruchs Revolutionen markieren gemeinhin historische Umbruche. Doch wie verhalten sich in Zeiten des Umbruchs die beteiligten Akteure? Was geschieht mit bestehenden staatlichen Einrichtungen? In welchen Kategorien denken die einfachen Leute? Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit der markantesten Zasur der Schweizer Geschichte, der Helvetischen Revolution von 1798. Das Interesse zielt dabei aber weniger auf das Neue und Revolutionare, sondern liegt vielmehr auf der Kontinuitat von Hergebrachtem in einem Moment beschleunigten politischen und sozialen Wandels. Neben einem Expose mit methodisch-heuristischem Fokus prasentieren vier empirische Fallstudien ausgewiesener Fachleute uberraschende Fakten und Interpretationen zur Bestandigkeit von Ideen, Institutionen und Individuen: So erkannten und nutzten traditionelle Standeseliten die Revolution als Chance zum langerfristigen Machterhalt. Im politischen Alltagshandeln hielten einfache Leute an uber Generationen etablierten Strategien fest und verwendeten hergebrachte Kanale der impliziten Partizipation uber Petitionen, um sich und ihren personlichen Anliegen auch bei neuen Machthabern Gehor zu verschaffen. Gleichzeitig konnte ein in kurzester Zeit geschaffenes Staatswesen nicht auf vordergrundig uberkommene Institutionen und die vom verdrangten Vorgangerregime geerbten Fachkrafte verzichten. Selbst die modische Staatsideologie bildete die dirigistischen Modelle ab, wie sie die Vergangenheit konzipiert und in anderen Gegenden Europas bereits umgesetzt hatte. Die Fuhrerfiguren der Helvetik bezweckten mit ihrer Politik nicht die Herbeifuhrung eines 'demokratischen' Zeitalters. Vielmehr profilierten sie sich als zum Scheitern verurteilte Vollstrecker reformabsolutistischer Visionen. Wilhelm Tell mit Sohn auf der helvetischen Trikolore - das Bild auf dem Umschlag - steht sinnbildlich fur diese merkwurdige Mixtur von Alt und Neu. About the Author: Der Herausgeber Daniel Schlappi hat an der Universitat Bern Geschichte, Literatur und Philosophie studiert und 2000 promoviert. Heute arbeitet er in Berlin, Bern und Munster an seinem vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds finanzierten Habilitationsprojekt: Gemeinbesitz, kollektive Ressourcen und die politische Kultur der alten Eidgenossenschaft (17. und 18. Jahrhundert).
